I took a couple of boat trips along the Wolfgangsee whilst on holiday in St Wolfgang recently - one to Strobl and one to St Gilgen. Both were thoroughly enjoyable, and the views from the boat were stunning - plenty of photo opportunities! The fares were very reasonable and the prices of tea / coffee / hot chocolate and also soft drinks onboard equally so. Timetables were readily available and the frequency of the various trips was excellent.

We loved walking and shopping in St. Wolfgang. The boat trip across was beautiful. A little cloudy at first but by the end the sun was shinning. St. Gilgan is a nice town but appears to be more of a tourist trap.

Great way to get around the lake. Easy to use timetable at each stop and electronic details at most of the next ferry. Tickets can be bought on board. Weekly ticket is good value.

I always use Bad Ischl as a base for my Salzkammergut visits, and whilst I’d used this ferry service before, it had only been for the Schafberg Railway -> St Gilgen route. This year, I wanted to do the full length of the lake from Strobl to St Gilgen. So, I caught the 150 Postbus (direction Salzburg Hbf) from Bad Ischl, alighting at Strobl Busbahnhof, then walked 10min to the lakeside, through pretty little Strobl. At the lakeside, I found the appropriate jetty and noted sailing times, then went off to have a drink and bite to eat at an establishment where I could see approaching ferries. The good thing is that if you’d not pre-arranged tickets, they’re happy to accept cash (no card) payment as you board the vessel. I spent the 1hr20min journey sitting outside at a table, on cafe-style seating, admiring the lovely views in the sun. The ship stopped at 6 locations on the lake. Note that there’s a St Wolfgang Markt stop, and a St Wolfgang Schafbergbahn stop, but if you get off at the wrong one, there’s maybe a 15min walk between the two. There’s a bar and drinks service on the vessel (mine wasn’t the older paddle steamer which sails in good weather and commands an additional supplement) and it has to be one of the most relaxing, scenic journeys one can make. Loved it.
