About
Dedicated to fine art photography of Asia, McDermott Gallery was founded in 2004 by photographer John McDermott. The New York Times called him the Ansel Adams of Angkor, writing that "McDermott's pictures are not just beautiful but iconic." McDermott Gallery has two locations in Siem Reap: at FCC Angkor and at Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor. Additional work may also be viewed at Belmond La Residence d'Angkor and Anantara Hotel & Spa.

This Gallery has moved
Dec 2018 • Couples
I first visited McDermott Gallery in the late 1990's and was captivated by his black and white visions of the land I love. I have traveled back to Siem Reap many times since then and each year I purchased a calendar and some photographs. I arrived back in Cambodia and was told that the Gallery had moved from it's old home in the grounds of the FCC to Raffles Hotel but there I was told that the Gallery has moved yet again to somewhere in Thailand. The FCC ispresently closed for renovation so I am hoping it will return to it's old home.

The primary works on display are starkly beautiful images of the Temples, primarily Angkor Wat, taken several years ago and in the absence of crowds. If you are fortunate enough to meet the owner/photographer he can fill you in on the images you select

Something different and special to do after seeing the temples
Feb 2018 • Couples
John was that something a bit different we were looking for. We had a small group of guests in Siem Reap, all of whom had been to Angkor before. We had John take some pictures of our group in the morning at a temple and booked drinks with him in his gallery that evening. John has been in Siem Reap for many years and has seen how the city and temple complex has changed over the last 20 years. He’s full of stories about the evolution of modern Cambodia and the temples. All of our group loved the time with John.

I’ve seen many Angkor picture books, and can say that John’s is the one that best captures the magic of the place. If you like Angkor, you’ll like his book. His gallery is centrally located near many nice restaurants, and is certainly worth a stop to see his work.

Superb photographs
Mar 2018 • Couples
We discovered McDermott's amazing photographs on the walls of the National Museum in Phnom Penh and were happy to find his gallery in Siem Reap. Bought two beautifully made Angkor photo books and had them sent at almost no cost to our address in the US.
Sending them to Europe would have been a different matter.....

Small gallery, visit after you've toured Angkor complex
Feb 2018 • Couples
The gallery is rather smaller than I expected, but contain awesome photos taken by McDermott before Angkor complex was touristy.

Finish your tours and then pass by this small gallery to see how the temples look like without people around.

Nice and cool photo gallery in Siam Reap
Aug 2017 • Friends
Decided to visit this place as I read about it in NYT article on Siam Reap. The place is within a walking distance from the bar street or Siam Reap. The gallery itself is quite small, so you shouldn't reserve too much time for the visit.

The gallery presents photos taken by John McDermott of Angkor temples in mid-1990s and 2000s. The photos are surreal, and temples seem to be "bathing in light". He took the photos by using infrared film which gave them thr very interesting touch, depth and contrast.

Prints of the photos can be bought there, but prices are quite high (from 15$ to several thousand $). The place is very well cooled, so it offers a good opportunity for refreshment and relaxation if you are walking close by.

Ethereal Photos Siem Reap
May 2017 • Friends
Went looking for contemporary art galleries in Siem Reap and found John McDermott's gallery. Beautiful infrared photos of several of the local Temples capture a feeling of quiet which is hard to get when visiting the temples filled with fellow travellers. There are 2 galleries- my favourite was in the Raffles hotel because of the hotel's colonial heritage and decor. The photos are available in several sizes and are fairly priced.

Good break from the sun hahaha
Mar 2017
Honestly walking around Siem Reap can be a very hot experience in the sense that the sun literally bears down on us. So when you see something like this, cool n quiet n elegant, it is such a nice haven to run to and then BANG get surprised by all these awesome photographs.
