Humberstone, alongside its close neighbour Santa Laura, is a ghost town of the nitrate mining boom that gripped Chile in the early twentieth century. The town which housed the entire nitrate community that worked at Humberstone comprises of the mining factories, the smelting processes, the trains to the coast, the workers' houses, schools for their children, a hotel with an... This place has a deep connection with the history of the country, is placed in the dessert and have a huge energetic charge, but I think government didn't take care of the place, to preserve the history of it, just put some panels with a brief information of the zone. There is no security taking care about the place, so... More

My expectations where low but I instantly changed my mind after entrance. The 3000 pesos was well invested. The whole place touch you, the wind howling in the buildings and the sound of lose plates or panels puts you 100 year back in to a scary movie. The site is bigger than I thought and you need at least 3... More

A must see while you are in Iquique. We took a private tour since we were pressed with time, but other services will offer a tour for the full day, 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Tour includes a trip to a small oasis in the middle of the desert called Pica. I think they cargo 25-30 thousand per person, lunch... More

Amazing place. The entrance is not expensive and it allows you to visit not only the city where the people lived back then but the offices where they worked. You can visit the only school that they had, and every house has elements such as the toys that the little kids used to play with and clothes that were used.... More

This place is absolutely awesome and a must-do if you're ever through Iquique. I never thought I'd fall in love with a ghost town, but I did. I only wish I had come earlier in the morning, so I'd have had more time to explore. There's so much to see and feel and do. Fascinating! They also organize nighttime visits,... More

This is probably a nice tour for someone who lingers for the past. Humberstone is in the middle of the desert. Most tours are full day sightseeing trips that include also Santa Laura, La Tirana, Matilla and a few other places. This place has been nicely restored to give you an idea of the daily life of the 3,800 people... More

A must seen to discover a important part of the Chile's history. There's a lot of tours to know the salitreras with a affordable price that includes a snack and a lunch. Very close to iquique (about 30 min by car) you can find this beautiful place fullfil of history. It does not exist any tour so you can go... More

The pictures look lovely. If only someone bothered to turn up and take me on the tour!! And after I had to pay for 2 people because they "don't take singles"!! Pathetic!!
