The Lake is pretty, and there are many things to do near the lake, i.e. shopping, walking on trails, museums, ferris wheel, etc.

We cycled from the hotel to the lake on a Sunday afternoon to explore. Really nice location and quite peaceful given the size of Suzhou. Lots to see going round the bays, people on jet skis, ice cream vans, statues, restraunts, etc

I walked around the lake near the Crowne Plaza hotel as well as by the convention center. It is very beautiful and they have nice waterfront pathways. There are many restaurants and shops nearby, though they are pretty expensive.

It depends on the weather too. After rain the air is cleaner and clearer. If you are on holiday then I wouldn't worry. To get away from the smog head for less densely populated ares.
