The big rock called El Peñol makes a very impressive scenario but navigating the Guatape lake is absolutely marvelous. I've done it twice, first time with friends on jet sky, we spend two hours around, and there are so many diverse spots, like the top of the ancient church that rise above the surface - the old town was drowned... I recommend that you visit and climb the 700+ steps to the top of the Rock so that you can see the Laguna de Guatape.

This is an Ocean @ more of 1700 meters over sea level with a lot of history, nice hotels, excellent food, beautiful women, good option for a honey moon or family tour, the Penol rock it's unique with a lot of stairs to climb, but, worth it, the view is amaizing!

We went independently, with no tour, and it was absolutely easy! Climbing the rock and recuperating from it takes some time, so don't be too rushed. Guatape itself is amazing, has really cool vibe and nice spots to hang out, not to mention all the photo opportunities :)

Definitely a mandatory place to visit. Even if it's a rainy day the view from the rock is beautiful. I recommend to bring a waterproof jacket just in case. Many tour agencies offer boat rides included in the fee. Tip: You have to pay additionally 18,000 Colombian pesos to go upstairs the rock and see the lagoon from above.

It's incredible the arrival to this place. We arrive by bus and turn after turn you star to flash the water level. The green is absorbent because only the sky is not. A place where you know much more will come but Mother Nature just did it's role. ( I know it's a damm but I didn't see it :))

This area of Colombia used to be off limits for many, many years due to drug trafficking - which explains why it wasn't on the radar as a place for tourists to visit, until recently. The area surrounding the lake is now going through a resurgence as Medellin's elite class invests in impressive weekend homes on the banks of Laguna... More

Loved the tiny and colourful town of Guatape. Beautiful streets and colours everywhere. We were part of a tour and I do think this area would be better explored with a car on your own to avoid some of the unnecessary stops we did on our way from Medellin to Guatape. But once you get to Guatape its so worth... More

Beautiful conservation area, amazing views. You can climb the rock as well its about 750 plus stairs to the top! I opted out and sat at this café/restaurant with amazing views of the surrounding area and the best fresh lemonade I had during my trip to Colombia. They have boat trips available as well, which was organized by our tour... More
