About
These classes and workshops are for those people who are seriously interested in learning about the beauty and history of these unique traditional art-forms. Visitors can visit this living museum of antique instruments, take lessons, see orchestral rehearsals and catch performances of rare performing art-forms, some of them previously extinct and the results of the centers reconstruction and documentation projects. A family founded center, Mekar Bhuana's vision is to support traditional Balinese gamelan music and dance that is rarely seen or heard. Mekar Bhuana achieve this by working with the Balinese, researching, studying, documenting and reconstructing. Then we educate people, particularly the younger generation, to encourage awareness about the beauty of these endangered art-forms. Mekar Bhuana also formed an online store mekarbhuana and proceeds go to gamelan and dance projects and activities.

This experience was one of my favorites in Bali during my month long stay. The chance to sit with talented Balinesian musicians and learn gamelan was invaluable. My teacher, Putu, was patient and very clear and the owner, Vaughan, was delightful in setting everything up. We did a 2 hour session on their beautiful property and explored the very cool surrounding neighborhood after. I will definitely be retuning for a continued education. Please support this amazing school!

As a Music Teacher I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Mekar Bhuana.
I did a private full day workshop which was informative and practical. The workshops also come with a copy of the study material.
Vaughn was knowledgeable and very supportive. The workshop gave me the opportunity to try a range of instruments. I would recommend the workshops or lessons at Mekar Bhuana for Music teachers, students and anyone who wants to learn about Balinese music and culture.

This was a very special opportunity. We very strongly recommend the experience of learning about this rich art form in the company of such dedicated and welcoming people. Over the course of two weeks in Balu, this was unquestionably the highlight and it opened up our understanding of the culture in ways that enhanced the rest of our stay. Lovely people who welcome you into their own home to share their deep love for one of the world's most truly wonderful cultural traditions.

Mekar Bhuana is great. I took four of the four-hour music workshops over a two-week period and learned a lot about Gamelan.

Vaughn, who taught the historical portion of the workshop, is very knowledgable about the history of music in Bali and passionate about sharing it. Pur, who taught the practical portion, is a forward-thinking composer of Gamelan with deep roots in tradition, and a fantastic teacher. They are both are skilled on a wide variety of instruments, and they are both wonderful people with interesting musical minds.

Highly recommend taking classes here and supporting this place. Their mission to preserve disappearing forms of Gamelan is an important one.

We did a four-hour gamelan and legong (dance) workshop at Mekar Bhuana, and it was hands-down the best thing we did in Bali—and we had a lot of fun here doing other stuff too, like surfing, visiting Ubud, etc. But, this was a deep learning experience that was also super fun and engaging. We laughed and learned in equal measure.

As other reviewers have noted, co-founders and husband-wife team Vaughn and Evie know their stuff. Vaughn is a New Zealander who has lived in Bali for 22 years and is an accomplished ethnomusicologist. He's followed in the wake of Colin McPhee (House in Bali) and recovered dozens of lost musical traditions and instruments, which he's been repatriating back into Balinese society. He leads the gamelan part of the program, along with Pur, a professional musician, which comprises a quick overview/lecture on the history of music in Bali, followed by lots of beguiling demonstration, and capped with some hands-on instruction. I did this with my kids, and we had a ton of fun. It sounded horrible, I'm sure. But, you learn a lot by coupling listening with doing.

Lunch was a traditional Indonesia meal with yummy tofu, tempeh, chicken, and rice, capped by fresh mangos from the tree in the garden.

In the afternoon, Evie took over. She is a professional dancer who's been at it since the age of four. She also gave a short presentation on the history of dance, an amazing demonstration, and a hands-on workshop. I was pretty proud of my legong talents; but my kids thought otherwise.

In the end, this was amazing. In an over-touristed place like Bali where so much of the local culture has been packaged for quick, easy consumption, this workshop was a great change of pace. It was deep, immersive, and engaging. We came away with a much better understanding of Balinese culture and history. Highly recommend.

I only had a couple of days to spend in Bali, but the two hours I got to spend with Vaughan and Pur for the Gamelan workshop was the best time I had there. The instrument collection is truly amazing, and the whole experience comes together nicely through Vaughan's presentation of their history and cultural context, as well as with his demonstration of them together with Pur. The second part of the workshop, where we could try the instruments ourselves was a mindful and fun experience. Thanks to Pur for great instructions and patience. I only had time for a 2 hour workshop, but would recommend 4 hours if you have the time. A must-do when visiting Bali!

We had a great time meeting Vaughan and his instructor in learning about Balinese gamelan. We took the full day course which involved learning about the various instruments and trying our hand at the various playing techniques. The instructor was very thorough and most patient and this was most appreciated since we are beginners. A nice lunch was also provided. All in all a great experience and highly recommended!

It was a pleasure to meet Vaughan and Pur at Mekar Bhuana for my private 4 hour workshop on Gamelan Music during my brief visit to Bali.  Getting an insight into the musical culture of Indonesia and Bali itself had been something I had wanted to do for a while. As a musician, I found myself challenged to learn and adopt new playing styles and abandon some of the fundamentals of notation and tonality idiomatic of the western music I am more familiar with.

Together, their teachings and practices not only serve to embrace and nurture the traditions of Balinese music but also to inform and inspire those looking to learn more about the origins of the musical world of Gamelan in its various forms, through both hands-on sessions to get to grips with playing the instruments and imparting learned technical knowhow.

Restoring ancient instruments and acquiring and building new ones using traditional methods as well as comminuty and family group performances are just some of the other areas of focus for the school, helping to protect the value of the art form as well as ensure it's survival long into the future for generations to hear and enjoy.

Cups of tea and coffee and plates of fresh fruit were also much enjoyed at break time aswell as a hot lunch consisting of traditional fare.

Thanks to the whole team at Mekah Bhuana for a unique and fulfilling experience and also for ensuring I didn't miss my flight to KL afterwards!

We took a 4 hour private Gamelan workshop for two and it was so much fun! After a presentation and explanation of the history of the music and instruments we played with a wide variety of them, including some restored antiques. Highly recommended for serious musicians or those serious about learning. Vaugh and Pur are expert musicians who were eager to share their wealth of knowledge. Definitely worth the money.

As a Jazz/Chinese opera musician, I am always curious of other traditional musical cultures. Had a 4 Hour gamelan workshop and 2 hour balinese dance workshop at Mekar Bhuana and it was an eye opening experience. The workshops are both very well structured, with brief historical presentation, demonstrations and hands on practice sessions.

Vaughan, Evie and Pur all experts in the field and are ethusiastic and passionate about preserving and teaching the traditional arts. I loved the family setting of the school and of coz the home cooking was amazing!! If you want to really immerse in the Balinese culture instead of just sightseeing, this is definitely a must do activity for musicians and non! I had a chance to try out different gamelan sets and to play something simple at the end of the workshop. For the dance workshop, I also get to learn a simple routine and felt very satisfied! It was a good workout as well!!

Thanks again Mekar Bhuana! hope to come back next time to learn more!!

We're thrilled that you had such a rewarding time taking both a private gamelan and private dance workshop with us! As a musician, the 4-hour private gamelan workshop was the ideal choice for you. Evie said that you also loved doing the dress-up in traditional Balinese dance costume! We'll pass on your positive comments about your gamelan study to Pur, and to our chef Wayan about your lunch. "Xie xie" for the enthusiastic review and hope to teach you again very soon! Vaughan Hatch, Co-founder
