Bromo and the surrounding crater (the 'sea of sand') are incredible, but there's absolutely no need or point in booking a tour, unless you want to burn money and probably have a more rushed time - it's such an easy volcano to get to yourself!
There are 2 options... One is to get yourself to Probolinggo bus station, where you can get a minibus to Cemorow Lewang. This is definitely easiest, and the road is good.
Alternatively (and a bit more interestingly), start in Melang and get a minibus to Turin (or something that sounds like that), where you'll find loads of people waiting to either sell you jeep transport (great for a large group) or ojeks (motorbike taxis, make sure they look like they can get up steep hills and tracks, ie not an auto scooter!) to Cemorow Lewang. Although this way up is more expensive (but way cheaper than a tour), you get to enter the crater from the far side from Bromo and then cross the sea of sand which is brilliant, right past the volcano, not to mention the views on the way up the crater rim, where as the road to Probolinggo is not that exciting.
We took the exciting way up and the easy way down which is probably the best way to do it (not sure how to arrange transport the exciting way down from Cemorow), and then got the bus from Probolinggo back to Melang where we left our big bags.
We stayed at a homestay for 150,000 IDR (there are loads, all on the only turn off from the main village road), pretty basic, but you can splash out on hotels. In terms of once you're there, Bromo is a 20 min walk then probably the same again to the summit. You can see it and the marked path from the village, and there are loads of guys trying to sell you a motorbike ride across. You can also walk to the viewpoint that the big tours go to in about an hour, but again loads of people will offer to drive you, and your accommodation can arrange this.
Doing it yourself like this just means you can spend a little more time if you want, take a more interesting way up, save some money and avoid the crowds (we climbed bromo on the afternoon we arrived and almost had it to ourselves, as all the tours climb it in the morning, and then went to the viewpoint the next day).
For your transport down, ask at any hotel, minibuses go from the 'homestay road' turnoff.

To climb Bromo is very easy, it's the easiest volcano, beacause u can arrive to the top by horse, car, jeep, moto, walk. Even appropriate to go with children and huge reward is waiting on the top, because the crater is huge and you can stay at the edge and see huge steam flow. The hole is the biggest i saw from 6 volcanos i climbed.
So if you are looking for beginner level volcano - this one is for u

To get to the rim of Mt Bromo one has to cross the " sea of sand". As you can guess it is a dusty experience. It was fortunate that the day we made our visit we had fine weather and there was no wind to contend with. Had it been the case the experience would not have been comfortable. Come prepared what ever the case with a mask and some protective eyewear (e.g. sunglasses) .
You can either walk the way or hire a pony with its handler. It is not difficult to walk it but be sure you have good grip shoes to make an easier experience (note you'll need the same to contend with the stairs up Mt Bromo)

Do NOT, i repeat do NOT go with these guys. I have travelled around the world for almost two years, so i'm pretty used to a lot of backpackers stories and lifestyle, but this was something i have never experienced!!
We were travelling with 4 people at this time and we literally almost died 3 times in 2days! The transportation was in such a bad and dangerous condition we had to change busses 6times is 2days!
Not because the airco wasnt working (which is also the case) but because our first driver crashed the van into another van while driving. This driver was crazy and as a result we had a car accident! Lukily nobody was hurt really bad but one of us hurt his knee pretty bad so he wasn't able to hike up to mount bromo.
Then we were left alone in the middle of noWhere with nodody telling us anything, driver gone and car broke. After an hour or so, we had to go to the pollice office, where we had to wait 2more hours! Another van picked us up but had only seat for 7people while we were with 11!!! We still had at least 7hours to go. With no other option we cramped ourselves in the van.
When we got to the office close to bromo we explained to them this wasn't normal, they gave us 'bus number 3' Understand that this day nrmally takes 11hours in the car, in the end it tool us 17hours! So we arrived at our hotel at 11pm, and had to wake up at 1am for doing the bromo.
With not enough sleep we started the other day. Van number 3picks us up but by then the trunk of the bus was so busted so we couldnt use ist, so all the luggage was put on our seats, so again 7seats for 11people!
We went to the office and explained our new issues. They put us in 'van number4'. After 30minutes the driving rod Came off , while driving! The bus could stop just in time and everybody jumped out of the bus immediately!! The driver was stending next to the pouring gasoline with a sigaret and his engine on?!?!?!! One of us started yelling how crazy and dangerous this was but he didnt bother! So we just went in to the bus to shut doWn the engine ourselves! We waited there for 2,5hours, again middle of nowhere and it was getting dark. We tried to call to 'our personal contact from yogyakarta.nl, they told us he would call us back in 5minutes, we heard nothing!! After 20minutes we called again... No one picks up!! Irresponsible and ignoring a paying cusomar in danger and need!!
"Bus number 5" shows up, it looks worse than alle the earlier ones but with no other option we took it. After and hour the gear.... Breacks down in the middle of a crossroad, the driver tries pulling, grabbing... It's broken! In the dark again out on the street we tried to call yogyakarta.nl again, nothing!! We try to find a taxi to get away from this hell, but there was nothig!
An hour later, "bus number 6" shows up, looking awefully dangerous again, but again stuck there we get on it. It starts driving up the mountain to get to ijen, it's black dark by then. He experiences problems with the gear too and start rolling backwards on the mountain!!! At this point one of the guides tries to jump out of the window of the van!! Everybody in the bus was or crying or yelling or trying to get out!
We arrived in ijen after a lot of tears, asked for a private taxi in the hotel to get us out of there!! We didnt get to do ijen, but at least we're still alive...
We are now 28th of august, we did the trip on the 13th of august, called yogyakarta.nl , blue fire travel , wernert ramon (our personal contact) , mailed them several times... Nothing, silence... Irresponsible, not even courage or decency to reply us, because they know what happened was wrong!

I cant never get enough of Bromo, one of the most beautiful place that I ever been. The scenery was just awesome. The horseback riding was also thrilling. It is not as easy as you thought. It is freezing in the wee hours in the morning, so prepare yourself with sweater and gloves.

When I visit Bromo last April, I didn't really expect it as beautiful as I remembered when I first visit this captivating place when I was a child. All I remembered was the cold, and never ending stairs. Last trip, I went with my coworker, and get to see 4 destination points in this spectacular place. First, it was "penanjakan" 15 mins walk to one of the top to watch the sunrise. The view was breathtaking, when the horizon changed to red then blue and the clouds beneath you rolls like waves and clears up. And even there's a lot of people there, but you can really enjoy the serene moments and all the long drive pays off. Second was the crater. The locals offer a horse ride ranges from IDR100k to IDR30k, to drop you from your jeep until the stairway to the crater. Oh, mind the dust, so get a mask or just buy some there cause the sand is extremely thick, and will get in the way thru your lungs when hiking to the first steps of the stair. Lots of snacks sold below the crater, also decent toilets. They even sells t-shirts and other souvenirs. There are also cameramen offering snapshots, but its best to bring your own camera.
3rd, we went to the savana or they called it the telletubies hills (identical). Good place to take pictures it was surrounded by green hills, in the middle of nowhere (no toilets here). 4th it was "the whispering sand". The place was used for a movie with one of Indonesian famous actress. Good place for pictures. We are very pleased with this visit and wish we could go there more some other time..

Bromo is one of the best mount number three in the world. There are a lot of people coming to Bromo everyday. The people are from Indonesia (Domestic) and abroad (International). They want to know and see the Beautiful Bromo directly. Bromo have 5 Spot which is important to explore. The first is Bromo Crater, the second one is Penanjakan View Point One Bromo, third Savanna, fourth Sand of Sea (Whisper) and the last is Mentigen Hill. And one of them, the Spot number 2 is the most beautiful, why? because everyone can catch the Amazing Sunrise from this place. Penanjakan View Point One is the only one place to See Amazing Sunrise in Bromo. The visitors will feel like in the heaven.

u must see when visit east java, i reached it from Surabaya then went to Pananjakan and stayed for a night while waiting for seeing sunrise and the amazing volcano.
Remember, you need extra clothes on and a hat to cover up your head, ears and neck cos it was so cold in early morning. after seeing the beautiful sunrise and Mount Bromo, we drove across the desert and take some a beautiful pictures with the background of Mount Bromo, across the savanna. Then we climb to Mount Bromo, you can climb up or ride a horse. Before or after climbing the stairs, you can take pictures with a very beautiful volcano view, when you reach the top you can see the Mount Bromo crater which belching smoke. What a amazing Bromo !!

Bromo has magical charming and first class landscape. Access road to Bromo via Tosari is quite smooth, and scenic. So does from Nongkojajar. I recommend you to have scenic drive route : Pasuruan-Warungdowo-Tosari-Wonokitri-Pananjakan, then Bromo-Wonokitri-Tosari-Nongkojajar, or vice versa.
I read someone unpleasant experience w/ homestay/hotel! Hardtop, and the crowd in Pananjakan at dawn. I say, this is your sense as traveler is being tested, and feel travelling Indonesian way. You should bargain! To avoid crowd in Pananjakan, you can take 5 mins go upside Bukit Cinta (love hill) and you'll find full Bromo landscape in your hand.
