This place used to be the home of an influential person in Medan named Tjong A Fie. The house is really big and beautiful. Although it has become a museum, there’s still praying rooms used by the family which tourists aren’t allowed to step in.
The entrance was 35,000IDR per person during my visit and there was a guide that would lead the way.
It’s really hot inside though, better bring a hand fan with you, or anything you can use to fan yourself.

Heritage tourism in the city of Medan that should not be missed. Feels like going back in time when you enter this Mansion.
The building and its contents are still well maintained even though it is more than a century old. It is always busy with tourists and there is a ban on taking photos in several locations because flash cameras can damage several objects in the room.
There is a paid ticket to enter the mansion, the funds from the ticket are used to maintain this mansion.
A heritage tourist gem in the city of Medan that is worth preserving.

Our guide brought us here. For Rp35,000, you get a guide to explain the rooms, the family and descendants of this great man, and even take portrait photos posed against beautiful surroundings.
Photography isn't allowed in three rooms.

This interesting attraction opens its doors at 9am and charges a IDR35,000 entrance fee which was well worth it. The building looks old and dilapidated from the outside but very grand and posh on the inside and clearly shows how the very wealthy and super influential lived their lives in the past.
The entrance fees cover the services of a guided tour around the mansion and on a busy day they have up to five guides doing the honour of showing the visitors around.
The guide we had was very knowledgeable and dedicated about what she's doing. She brought us on a wonderful journey around the mansion showing us the various rooms and sections of the very huge house, upstairs as well as downstairs and at the same time narrating about the owner's lifetime accolades and achievements.
This is a definite must-visit when in Medan.

A grand mansion that all tourists should come and visit to understand one man's excellent efforts to contribute to the growth of the city of Medan through local and Chinese migrant labour.
Tjong A Fie was an associate of Cheong Fatt Tze (Blue Mansion in Penang, Malaysia), and both mansions certainly have their similarities.
When we arrived, an English speaking guide took us around. He was from the local university and this was his gig to practise speaking English. He refused to accept money, but we pressed it into his hand and he was more than appreciative.
The 'tour' was an hour but we spent another hour going through the mansion ourselves.

At least as interesting as similar houses in Melaka and Pinang. The house is fairly well maintained but could use restoration. A lot of history about Tjong A Fie and his family, but the house itself is the best part. The guided tour is worthwhile.

Had a nice, free private tour around the mansion included in ticket. NO pressure for a tip. Nice interior, In some rooms (family shrine?) it's not allowed to take photos. Hidden between modern buildings, easy to miss.

Tjong A Fie is the historical Chinese building in Medan. It is very beautiful place. It is do mainly popular in Medan. Located on central of the town. The entrance price is IDR 35k for each person and it is cheap. The price won't disappoint you, bc you'll see beautiful sightseeing inside and outside. You'll get knowledges from this museum about Chinese(domainly), etc. From the outside, the park's entrance is colourful and stunning. Many flowers are grow up in the garden. Also, the are tour guidances who guide us. Inside of the room is very beautiful. There are so many historical Chinese things inside of this place like paintings, books etc. Very historical things. No dust and everything is clean. From the highest floor we'll see one of Medan's busy road. The service is good. The tour guidances are friendly. On the other hand, Park is quiet lack available there(if u have vehicles) . This place is highly recommend if you want to know more about Chinese and enrich ur excitement place about traveling to Medan

A truly hidden treasure until it was opened for public and tourism 4-5 years ago??
The house is still kept in fairly good condition and it is really a treasure. The entrance fees is Rph. 35.000 per person which I think is cheap as it is used to maintain and manage the house which I believe needs lots of money. The guided tour around the house provided by the family-management is also a good way to tell visitors about the history of the family however my guide yesterday told only about the Tjong A Fie's family and their life. It could have been more interesting if they could also tell us about the architecture, some of the displayed memorabilia etc etc, just two cents worth.
They also open a boutique selling Kebaya Nyonyas (Peranakan Style), a cafe is also in the making they say.
When I visited it was a Sunday afternoon, there was also a traditional dance performance at the courtyard. It was supplied and supported by local tourism office.
This Mansion is really a treasure and at all cost it has to be kept in good condition. Government must pay more attention in preserving this kind of place.

The site is raked #1 in tripadvisor among the attractions in Medan, I fully agree.
Tjong A fie mansion is quite well preserved for examples the furnitures and tiles are original. I have visited the similar thing in Penang (Chong Fatt Sze Mansion or also known as Blue House), my parents also did visit the Chong Fatt Sze Mansion in China and we all think this is the best preserved. Tjong A Fie (张耀轩) is the nephew of Cheong Fatt Sze (张弼士) and they were big Chinese tycoon at that time.
I'm glad to know that the building is now still belongs to the Tjong family and one of his great grand daughter was sitting near the ticket counter. Many original artifacts and pictures you can see inside the building.
The entrance fee is IDR35,000 (if I'm not wrong) with English speaking guide. But I think the information provided by the guide is too brief and limited. There must be a lot of interesting stories to tell in terms of the original owner, the history of the building, architecture structure of the house, feng shui.... etc to tell.
