This is a place to proof that wild elephants, birds, apes can live wild and freely in a palm oil plantation. Enough is biased and baseless judgement on how bad palm oil plantation impact on wild life! You should see how elephants enjoy consuming palm oil leaves! It is a hidden gem with beautiful water fall and stunning lake. If you are lucky you can spot native rare birds. Nature lovers and wild life promoters should come and see by her/his own eyes how beautiful and harmonious is the live of these elephants family in Barumun Nagari! The guide, the driver and even the owner are absolutely amazing! One more thing, advance reservations is a must because this place is a sanctuary so they must limit number of visitors! This place is NOT touristy and definitely NOT for for big group of tourist who only carE for selfies! Only those who love nature and wild life would be rewarded by the beauty of this place!

I spent one day in Barumun Nagari Wildlife Sanctuary in August 2019. The sanctuary is located close to Padang Sidempuan. The owner of the sanctuary picked us up at the hotel to go to the sanctuary. The main objective of this sanctuary is to rescue endangered Sumatran elephants, that have been mistreated by owners or orphaned baby elephants (found alone in the wildlife. The owner (Henry) is very friendly and professional. It was both a fantastic and unique experience. Indeed, Henry is enthusiastic, fond of Sumatran elephants, and fascinating when he talks about elephants. Moreover he has exceptional level of knowledge on Sumatran elephants. He knows all details you may wish to know about Sumatran elephants' characteristics and behavior. The elephants are not stressed and kept in very healthy conditions; all of them live in a very large sanctuary, with many waterholes where they can have bath and "mud shower". We were very lucky as we saw 3 mother elephants with babies. The work of the keepers is crucial and huge for these rescued elephants. CONGRATULATIONS!!! We had lunch with the owner and his team. Food was excellent. The second objective of the sanctuary is t rescue the critically endangered Sumatran tigers. When we visited the sanctuary, there was a female tiger called Gadys (that cannot be released in the wilderness as she has an injured foreleg (due villagers' traps). She was pregant. There was also a male tiger called Monang that should be released in the wilderness When you'll come in Padang Sidempuan, I HIGHLY recommend to visit Barumun Nagari Wildlife Sanctuary, allowing you to have a wonderful experience and to support Henry and his team in continuing their fantastic work. I’ll come back for a longer stay as a volunteer in Barumun Nagari Wildlife Sanctuary!!!

This place is amazing. It was exactly what I was looking for when I decided to visit an elephant sanctuary. Every day I spent there was filled with quality elephant time; walking with them, feeding them treats, witnessing them in their daily routines... I even slept outdoors with them one night which was pretty magical. The people here are doing such great work, and will treat you like one of the family as soon as you arrive. I highly recommend a visit if you're interested in animal rescue and conservation ♥

Really interesting day trip from Medan, lots to see and experience in the surrounding countryside. Great views of the volcanos and Lake Toma, and fascinating to see something of village life. Mr Erwan was an excellent, safe, driver and guide.

It was a last minute planned getaway for me and my family of 7 on last Christmas. I chanced upon Tri Jaya Tours and liaise with Diana ; whom was super friendly and understood my family needs. I travelled with my niece (3 yo and my in laws who were about 70 yrs old) She gave me some useful insights on Medan which was extremely helpful. On the day of arrival ; we were greeted by our awesome driver ; Dedi who was undoubtedly knowledgeable , kind and accomodating. We wanted to taste Medan's local cuisine as soon as we landed and he brought us to a fancy restaurant with a good spread which was a reasonable pricing. Afterwards, our journey commence to Lake Toba and the journey was undeniably enervating and long but Dedi humoured us with his local folklore and was also kind enough to make stop pits for us at any time... + Lake Toba was serene and gorgeous. The journey was worth it ♥️ 2 days afterwards, me and my two teenage daughters aged 11 and 13 climbed up Mount Sibayak to catch the morning sunrise. We had engaged Tri Jaya services again for the outing and of course with Dedi again as our driver. He picked us up punctually at 2.30am local time at the hotel lobby as promised. Though it was very much pre dawn, Dedi's driving skills did not falter. He was careful and was very much alert. Fast forward, we were half dead after our ascend up Mount Sibayak ( but again definitely worth the sweat and pain 😄) - Dedi brought us to a small quaint eatery for lunch. Pretty! The day lead on with our trip to the local fruit market and we ate yellow tasty local durians. Yummy! In a nutshell, if you intend to visit Medan save yourself the trouble and book yourself with Tri Jaya Tours. Look for Diana (she's the boss!) and ask for Dedi 😄😄
