This area has sculptures depicting the life of the refugees who fled to Busan from Seoul at the outset of the Korean War, centered around a flight of 40 steps. A visit to the Cultural center is a must as there are 2 floors of exhibits with photographs and artifacts on display. The 2 guides there spoke excellent English and gave a very heartfelt narration of the background of the Korean War and how it affected their country and people. I ended up sharing my experience of searching for my roots in China with them as they too received requests from overseas Koreans seeking to find their lost family members. My short visit became a really meaningful one.

For my last day in Busan I didn't have much planned. Then I remembered that there was an attraction (though I wasn't particularly eager) nearby that I didn't visit called the 40 Steps.
So I strolled towards Jungang to find the 40 Steps, which I did after spotting several supposedly famous bronze statues. Now what? Climb up the steps and count them. Yup, 40. Now what?
Unexpectedly, I started to spot a few colorful murals on the alley walls. It was as if I'd found a secret location.
The place I unintentionally discovered was, according to the only English sign that I saw, "The 2nd Street Art Festival". All sorts of quirky and colorful art decorated the walls, fences and staircases of the alleys.
I was randomly exploring one alley to another in hope to find some more art. I believe I was the only tourist there because no one else were crowding the art or taking pictures. People were just going about their everyday lives amongst the art. Some of the artworks spotted I feel were even more interesting than the ones I saw in Gamcheon Village.
The alleys and roads were comfortable to walk with very little traffic.
What a wonderful unexpected event this has turned out to be :)

Actually i reached there by night, what is in sight is coffee shop, an old train road n signboard, the staircase plus the statue with boom and the the other statue on the stair. I did go up the stair but is all dark so i just make my way back. Haha.
Will visit again for the nice painting, and this time i will go early.

This was near our guesthouse so we were able to see this place without a lot of people around. On the street is a large sign telling its historical significance as a meeting place for the people to be reunited with family.
I did try to count the steps. RunningMan the variety show had filmed here too.
There is a Paris Baguette along the street so you can get coffee and bread while checking it out.

Quiet area close to the metro. It has interesting, nice sculptures with good explanations that revise the history of Busan during and after the Korean war. Short visit.

The entire area is reflecting the life in Korea back in the 50s and 60s.
The ’40-step Culture & Tourism Theme Street’ was designated ‘The Best Street’ by the Busan municipal government in June 2004. A great place for exploration and see the history of Korea

Actually I went to Busan suddently without any plan and map. I was totally no idea about what the 40 steps and the theme streets were before I went to there. However, I quite enjoyed my own walking tour at there. It was another feeling when you walked through all the streets without any maps and expectation.
How I experience this area:
Just follow your feeling, walk on your way, find the next street by the signage on the light poles. When u really think that you get lost, ask the local. it's really great chance to communicate with the local

this small area was on the busan map i was given so i headed to check it out as it was close, there really wasn't much to see, some small restaurants and a few plaques with some info on the area. but up and past the stairs is some small winding streets that are ok for a wonder through.i don't really know what the attraction is,didn't see much culture and tourism themed things.check it out if you're close though

In short time you can see important things about the history of Korea and especially about immigration. The place used to be where families find each other after the war. It doesn't need to spend a lot of time but it worth it.

I thought I was going to have to climb up loads and loads of steps like those shown in the Korean drama but it turned out to be a rather short "trip". Nevertheless, the area was rather interesting. Few cafés here and there. Sculptures with descriptions here and there and I suppose I got lucky that day. I managed to catch a street performance. A lady singer with a couple of music instruments playing guys. She sang really well and audiences clapped and cheered. If this happens often, I would go again just to catch them perform. I say you have nothing to lose going there if you have nothing to do as you could just continue on to the next destinations including the Busan Modern History Museum and the street filled with all sorts of books.
