This is a small but very informative maritime museum with loads of info, and some great displays. It is also lovely and cool with huge fans keeping a lovely temperature. Its cheap as well.

Spent nearly 2 hours here. Very interesting showing the history of the town, the influence of the sea and artifacts from sunken vessels

Not a great place to go. Exhibited objects are quite mixed up. No clear storyline/timeline to link the scattered pieces together. Many objects not discovered from "marine archeology" - which is kind of tricky given the theme of the museum. Anyway, the National Museum in...More

start by watching the video. It makes the exhibits you see come to life and puts the historical context. Amazing to think that this location could have been Tarshish of the bible and was such a maritime hub. well presented exhibits.

Covers history to the present day. Has photo's of before and after the tsunami hit the area in 2004. The fort walls remained intact.

As other reviews have said, the museum is a bit muddled. We were hoping for more of a history of Galle and it’s various inhabitants but it wasn’t really there. There was very little in fact about trade routes, what was traded etc. Some of...More

The museum is housed in an old Dutch Building, which has 2 floors. You enter through the top floor and exit through the ground floor, which is bang opposite the District Courts. There are not many exhibits of value and interest. But you just go...More

It used to be that this museum had many ancient Sri Lankan artifacts. Bur now half the small old museum is occupied by ghastly nouveau riche flavoured gilded figures of Chinese. With Sri Lanka so indebted to China with Chinese loans Sri Lanka cannot pay...More
