The Palmyra Museum is a must on any visit to Palmyra. It actually has a lot of very interesting artefacts and is much less congested than the National Museum in Damascus. We visited in 2002 and it was a stunning display of over 4,000 years of history. Unfortunately the Museum was ravaged by the current conflict, although a lot of... More

Visited here in April 2011. Gained a little history about the great city that was. Quite interested in the funerary busts that are placed at entrance of most graves. There is a great bust and base in the grounds of the museum that is well preserved and much better than some in other funerary towers we visited.

This site is the place where you buy your area ticket to the ruins and is only a very small museum. When we visited several of the exhibits that had lights did not work, 2 wings were closed and the rest was not very well signposted. The best artifacts have been sent to Damascus and elsewhere but there are a... More

Some well preserved artifacts including a couple of mummies. Most of the best pieces, including busts from various graves in the Valley of the Tombs, are now in the National Museum in Damascus

Well worth a visit to get an insight into Palmyra. Some very good pieces of history here which are not behind any form of glass. The mummies are v well preserved and well worth seeing. Only problem was the smell of cigarretes despite no smoking signs everywhere.

Guidebooks to Palmyra, Syria (notably the Lonely Planet) greatly under-rate the Palmyra Museum in Palmyra. Certainly much more modest than the museum in Damascus, it nevertheless has a fine collection of rare objects: notably lifelike and very expressive images of the dead in the local tombs.
