Definitely a must visit if you like to do some hiking into the hills area away from the highway. There is an admission fees of 200TWD to enter the Zhuilu old trail starting from March 2017 and the admission fees booth is bout 20mins ahead of the trail head, if you are taking the shuttle bus/cab to the Swallow Grotto... The Zhuilu old trail is definitely a hike that's worth planning for and doing if you have the fitness and time when you visit Taroko. As other reviewers have said, you have to apply for a park entry permit a week in advance on the Taroko park website, and on the day of, you have to complete a few things... More

Only the last 3km of this walk is open due to typhoon damage last year. The first km is straight stairs (I'm terrible at stairs and it was hot but I made it in my own time). The next km is 3/4 stairs mixed with flat/elevated and the last km is pretty flat. The magnificent part is the last 500m... More

The Zhuilu Old Trail is an awesome hike. Lots of spectacular view of the gorge. If you need help with the permit system, search for Keith Rebec's Zhuilu Old Trail guide on Google.

@Swallow Grotto, the start of the trek up to Zhuilu Old Trail. The entire trek took us about 5 hours (we trekked slowly, taking in the sights). My companion, who wasn't an outdoorsy/exercisy person, even declared that it was a trek she did not regret. The view from the top rendered us speechless by its beauty and majesty. Photos we... More

It's been a long time to hear this name "Zhuliu Old Trail" and see a lot of pictures on the internet ... Fortunately, a four-day holiday in February. I got this chance to visit the beautiful place in Hualian. I am proud of this place to introduce the people who never been there. It's not just awesome views on the... More

This was the most amazing hike I've done (and I've done a lot of hikes). Well worth the effort of coordinating with your hotel/B&B on the necessary permits. Safety standards in Taiwan differ to western countries, so you are need to take some responsibility for yourself and your fellow hikers on this walk. In some sections, the path is two... More

The 3.1km trail takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to hike up (mostly ascending) for the reasonsbly fit. Our guide says total elevation gained is about 700m (2,300 ft). There are two suspension bridges (one at the beginning) that offer good views of different portions of the gorge. Most of the trail are man-made stairs and provide good traction and... More

Loved the: BREATHTAKING, SPECTACULAR VIEW!!!!!! What I didn't like: Gosh, none really. Recommendations: 1. If you're a foreigner, hire a tour because of the logistics (example: you need to apply for a permit. Then the emergency contact must be Taiwanese.) If you are looking for a tour guide, may I suggest William from Eye Travel Taiwan. 2. Also practice on... More
