Worth a look

This is one of the small museums in this town. In a building from the colonial era it shows what the interior would have been like back then.

There are Portuguese colonial artifacts and replica furniture displayed inside this adobe and stone building. The building is typical 18th century Portuguese construction with wall of 600/900mm thickness. Partition wall within the building are original as are the tiled floors. Displays also include porcelain, maps, Manuel Lobo’s family tree and the old stone shield that once adorned the Portón de... More

This small museum can be visited well under 15 minutes and you can still have a good flavour of what was the Portuguese life in Colonia across a few centuries. Good as a museum package

Colonia is a gorgeous place to visit on the ferry over from BA in Argentina - and this museum is a good place to visit.

I went there twice. On a Thursday afternoon, quite after 4:30pm, and it had just closed. There was just a small sign saying the short opening hours, nothing else. Came back the following day, a Friday, within open hours. It was closed. Asked around. The museum closes on Fridays! How come? How com they do not inform this in a... More

One of the larger museums in Colonia (but still small) and one of my favourites. The Portuguese rooms are set out nicely, but my favourite part was the large collection of old maps of the world and South America, in particular. I would guess they are mostly copies, but still fascinating, especially the "gaps" to Patagonia and Australasia. Worth a... More

The five museums in Colonia all work on one ticket and you can see them all in about 1.5 hours. They are not world class museums and are not intended to be such. They are just intended to provide some ambience during your visit in this lovely little historic town. It was nice to visit the Portuguese House, it was... More

Colonia has several small museums and this was our favourite of the ones we visited. Good summary of Portuguese history in Colonia, including a room on the slave trade. Some cool very early maps of South America too. NB most info in Spanish. The entry is included in the overall ticket you can buy for 50 Uruguayan pesos that covers... More

If you’re a map lover, you may be interested in this museum that has many old maps on exhibition. The museum also showcases 18th century furniture, ceramics, and weapons used by the Spanish and Portuguese.

As the majority of the museums in Colonia,it is really small and you can see it in a few minutes. It has some nice objects, but it is a pity that as in the other museums of the town, fotos are not allowed.
