Very interesting night fishing with fire and birds and I think it is a must see of the city. It will be dependent on the weather and make sure you buy yourself bento boxes to enjoy on the boat while waiting. If you manage to go during the firework festival in summer you can enjoy both shows at the same... More

It is good to learn more about a country's culture and especially a specific place's unique activity that tell us so much more about the people the country and the environment there. It was a very special evening to me as it was my first time to witness cormorant fishing in a boat. There was dancing and performance first before... More

We had a conference in a hotel & invited one of the "masters" to demonstrate how to use the cormorant to fish. It looks cruel when the bird's neck is tied up with string, but bird doesn't appear in pain. Unfortunately all commentary is in Japanese.

Looking for a change from Temples and Castles? Try this. It is a bit 'touristy' but still an interesting and unusual experience. Get a Bento box delivered to the ticket office to eat on board. We used Kikusui 0582608777. Just beware, we ordered two boxes; one would have been enough; there was a lot of food! But highly recommend the... More

Nagaragawa Ukai is cormorant fishing that is conducted in the Nagaragawa River in Gifu City during the period from May 11 to October 15 every year. It was still cold on the boat on May 11, but we enjoyed not only the cormorant fishing but also the fireworks. On the boat, we ate Japanese-style bento, and especially grilled ayu(sweetfish) was... If you are into understanding the culture of Cormorant Fishing, this is a great place to see. It has a great cafe that overlooks the beautiful river and mountain(with snow) in winter). Nice place for lunch and great help with the persons serving us. Thank you 'Hero' for giving us the complimentary tickets. Gave us good advice about where to... More

This is something I've wanted to see for a while. As other posters will have explained, it is a tradition that goes back to the Edo period. All of the details are explained on their English website ( http://www.gifucvb.or.jp/en/01_sightseeing/01_01.html). Tickets: Our tickets were 3400 yen each. Although you can't book online via the English website, if you or someone you... More

Cormorant fishing has taken place on the Nagara river for more than a thousand years, and still takes place every night in the season (mid May to mid October). You can reserve a place from the tourist office at the JR station, or by the river at the Cormorant Fishing Viewing Boat Office. It costs around 3100Y on a weekday,... More
