One of the few castles I really enjoyed viditing, despite the restoration construction going on. The view is excellent as it sits already at a high elevation. If you have weak knees or struggle with stairs, take note. There are some really steep stairs going...More

The real reason to come to Matsumoto, but visitors should not forget the smaller places that are also rewarding, notably the beautiful shrines.

It was the one of best 3 castles I have ever visited in Japan. I was lucky to see some swans in the river surrounding this castle. Also the staff working here were willing to help tourists, particularly foreigners with their languages. ベスト3に入るお城でした!なんとも外観が素敵で、川に映る城の影と白鳥が居て写真を撮るにはとても良かったです。白鳥がいることはとても珍しいと思います。ボランティアスタッフの方もとても親切でした。

We got our tickets at the gate. I was there in Mid November and the castle was not full. Since you need to take your shoes off before entering the castle, make sure you have warm socks. The wooden floor can be cold.

There are crowds anytime of day. We saw the dressed up folks in the morning at 9am. Not sure if they are there in the afternoon.

They’re ‘shachi’, a mythical creature with the head of a dragon and the body of a carp. It was believed that this animal brings rain, so temples and castles were given these additions to protect them from fire.
