Nicely located in Nihondaira, it s a nice quick getaway for half a day, especially for kids. Some venues have been recently renovated. Take the time to ride all the way to the top, to contemplate a nice overlook of Shizuoka city. They do events and concerts at times up there too.

One of the most reasonable priced at ¥610 per person. The red panda exhibit and roller slide could be all day for young children. Animals are well cared for and the little restaurants are pretty good. Even busy this zoo allows you to just flow through. English and Japanese maps are free at information booth.

While everything looks rather new inside the zoo my feeling is nevertheless rather mixed. The icebears have as much space as the penguins and most of the cages really look like cages. Lots of concrete. No space for the animals to hide. If one compares it to San Diego zoo it is very obvious what flaws there are compared with... More

In the past decade this zoo has seen a vast amount of work and improvement. The visitor centre, primate enclosure and wild animal section (mainly where the big cats are) are all new and decent, but certain cages remain inadequate. Seeing an animal circled around endlessly is a heartbraking sight. I presume it's an ongoing project, and if so I... More

This is a very small zoo, and the animals seem to suffer for it. While some enclosures were somewhat suitable, some, like the hyenas, were downright pitiful. While I feel the keepers likely care for the animals, this just isn't enough.

The zoo is on the hill, recently renovated some parts. Good place to spend the day with your family. Our family loves animals, we visit Nihondaira Zoo every summer. There is a rope-way to go up the mountain where you can see a spectacular view of Shizuoka plus the ocean. You can come down on the rope-way or slide down... More

When we were there, it was drizzling and it seems that all the animals are taking shelter inside their quarters. Most of the animals enclosures are empty. So we managed to visit the indoor animals like turtles, penguin etc. The zoo closes at 4.30pm thus do be early if you want to catch it.
