There are a god selection of both traditional Japanese, and contemporary western paintings here, but for me the main draw is the excellent Rodin sculpture hall. In particular, the centrepiece 'Gates of Hell' is spectacular, and a definite 'must see.' Also worth noting is that this gallery was't at all busy when I went, and there were only a handful... More

it's a small, intimate museum in beautifully landscaped ground next to the Prefectural university. From time to time, special exhibitions are held, brought from other museums or countries focusing on certain artist(s) or period(s). There is a small museum shop & restaurant. There is also a reading room where you can rest & read the newspapers (only Japanese). The Rodin... More

I visited this modern museum from the port of Shimizu. The cab ride out was about 30-35 minutes and it cost about $35 USD (note: the cabs take only yen though.) I really liked the Rodin wing and found the other sections a little less compelling. Overall, I liked the museum. I can say it takes only 2 hours or... More

Very nice modern museum located on the campus of the Shizuoka University next to the library. We saw the 'genre and development of landscapes' exhibit from the Wein Museum; along with the Rodin Permanent exhibit, which was nicely displayed with English information, free audio guide, sculptures not overcrowded and really amazing. The Rodin Wing houses 28 pieces and it was... More

They have a nice selection of Rodin's statues. When there is a special exhibit on something you like, that's when you want to go, otherwise, if you are like myself, I am not so into statues, more like paintings, then this museum may not interest you. The architect of the museum is very nice and the Rodin floor is spectacular.... More

Good Auguste Rodin scultural wing with history narrated in other languages at each exhibit. A partnership with a local art academy brought too many sketchers into the exhibit making it difficult not to block someone's view.

An impressive display of Rodin exhibits. Start off with a leisurely walk through the sculpture garden, and come into the spacious museum to admire the Gates of Hell and meet The Thinker. An enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. The nearest rail station (kenritsu-bijyutsujkan-mae) is only about 15 minutes' walk away.

We came here to see the Rodin exhibit primarily. It was particularly breathtaking due to the architectural design of the space. We've been to the Rodin Museum in Paris and it was delightful to compare the way both museums choose to display his work. The Gates of Hell remains the most chilling and awe inspiring work of Rodin's and the... More

Worth a visit if you live in Tokyo. Only an hour away but I recommend a nights stay in Shizuoka city too. The museum has a great Rodin gallery and a decent collection of impressionist art. Quite impressive considering its somewhat remote location (6 mins from Shizuoka city then a 20minute walk - or bus/taxi if you prefer). The museum... More

For people living close to Shizuoka temporary closure of the museum is quite a blow. During the overhaul some of the exhibition originally for the musuem can be seen in either Sano Art Museum in Mishima and Ninoramu Art Museum in Kakegawa. Last exhibit for National Culture Festival is free of charge. I miss the museum a lot. I hope... More
