Shizuoka City Tokaido Hiroshige Museum was opened in Yui Honjin Park located in the station "Yui inn" in Tõkaidõ in 1994. It is the first art museum in Japan named the name of the ukiyoe artist and Utagawa Hiroshige of the Edo period (1797-1858). The collection of this art museum contains Hiroshige's representative Tõkaidõ series "Fifty-three Stations of the Tõkaidõ" (Tõkaidõ Hoeidõ Edition) and "Fifty-three Stations of the Tõkaidõ" (Reisho Tõkaidõ) and "Fifty-three Stations of the Tõkaidõ" (Gyousho Tõkaidõ) . In addition, masterpiece of its later years "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" etc. count about 1,400 pieces centering on the noted article of a landscape print.

When I visited, there was a small exhibition of Hiroshige's vertical series. A few of the prints had accompanying poor colour photocopy prints of the same location's previous horizontal edition. Information was very limited - no reproductions of Basho's poems on the Tokaido Road. Video content was very short, superficial and had very poor picture quality. Most of the building... More

A very interesting and worthwhile visit. No photos allowed indoors. The process of woodblock printing is explained and intermediate results displayed. You can pay to try to create a woodblock print for a souvenir. Across the street from the entrance is a 200+ years old building which used to be an indigo dying place. The vats are still there but... A small museum and collection of Hiroshige's block prints; along with other artists. The introductions and majority of the displays have English information. There's also a nice display of the steps of block printing and how many blocks are necessary for each coloration. A bonus at the lobby offers a hands on experience in making your own prints from copies... More

What I love when I travel is to find great small museums and galleries. Not the ones that take all day to look through or that you need to line up behind 500 people just to get in.
