Isezakicho has gone downhill since the early 1970s, the Matsuya department store is long gone though the physical building is still there. The Nozawaya is also gone, though part of the facade is still intact. Yurindo bookstore still there. Don Quijote (that's the way they spell it in English) store down the way a bit has a lot of stuff.... More

The main street has lots of nice restaurants, stores and whatnot. The side streets are where the love hotels, soaplands, and other questionable businesses are... INteresting for a walk - especially in the early evening.

2 posts on Trip Advisor said to go to this area for the shopping. Walked around for a few hours and unless you want to see a few brooms or flowers or napkins for sale - dont waste your time.

I like Isezaki. It has character. It is off the main tourist routes, and it is modest, but that is its charm. It is for ordinary folk, with limited means, so you will find bargains here, like a nice little souvenir shop, where the owner speaks English, and a great little second hand clothes shop.
