If you don't like crowds, avoid May. There were so many students visiting from all over Japan for their senior ritual excursions. People congregate around the gate before they go up the stairs. There is a power spot but need to ask local store people...More

While the exterior of the main gate is undergoing restoration, it is still incredible and there is plenty to see.

The gate itself is not visible due to the restoration underway. However, it is the entrance to the temple complex which is a must see when in Nikko.

The ongoing renovation at Toshogu Shrine should not stop you from visiting the complex. The Yomeimon Gate cannot be appreciated though at least for another couple of years I have been told.

When we visited the (Yomeimon) main gate was covered but still worth viewing all the surrounding buildings.

A ver impressive gate that is definitely a must-see in Nikko. The temple area behind the gate is very large, and you can spend quite some time exploring it :)

Unfortunately this gate was covered when we visited in Aug 2015 for repairs. The setting is wonderful and the buildings around it have really detailed carvings which can be appreciated.

This is one of the sites you have to see if you go to Nikko. Catch the tourist bus from the station and hop on and off at various stops. Although, many of the attractions are close together so you can get off at one...More

Be aware that this gate is not available for viewing as it is being restored and is therefore covered up. This certainly should not discourage anyone from seeing the rest of the buildings around.

This elaborate gate crafted with leaping lions and dragons was built for Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1634. There are over 400 carvings. It is also known as the sunset Gate. Below the front gable is an inscription by Emperor Gomizuo.
