Visited the lake around Nagahama and took a trip to Chikubu island. The cruise was great but just taking a picnic on the Biwa lake shore was just as nice, watching the sunset and listening to the waves. Peaceful and romantic!

There are old shrines and temples in the small islands in this lake. If you have enough time, visit that place.

Perhaps over-rated by locals...but a very pleasant walk after viewing the Castle. Travelled as a (mature age Australian foodie) couple to Japan in April/May 2017 - extensively by JR rail, air BnB Tokyo, hotels elsewhere.

The lake cruise to Chikubushima was wonderfully cooling in the August heat, though it was too hot to climb to the top. Nice way to spend a morning or afternoon
