Riding the bus is maybe the most efficient way of going around in Fukuoka. You only pay 100yen from Hakata Station to Tenjin, and you can pay even cashless via IC card or application. There are buses running minutely along the main roads so it's the most time efficient way of transportation. Although, during rush hour it might take pretty long to get from one point to another.

Want to go anywhere in Fukuoka? Then don't be afraid to use the very clean, efficient, and helpful Nishitetsu buses. They literally travel all over Fukuoka, dropping off and picking up from convenient locations all over the city and for very reasonable prices can take you to anywhere you want to go. The bus routes are often hard to work out so best advice is go to their website - easy to find - and access the information in a variety of different languages. Also, there are Nishitetsu centers in Tenjin, at Hakata Station, or you can find out about routes from the Tourist Information Centers at either Tenjin, or Hakata Station.
Get on the bus from the rear door and take the little white ticket from the machine on the railing at the top stair. This will give you a number. The number corresponds to a display grid at the front of the bus top middle-ish. If your number is "7" then when you get off the bus from the front door there will be a number under the number 7 that shows your fare. Drop the correct fare in the slot next to the driver as you get off the bus. If you do not have the correct change, the driver can help you exchange notes for coins, ¥1,000 notes are best. The buses are all wheelchair friendly and eco-friendly so by taking the bus rather than using a car or taxi you are supporting the community transportation system and being a little more eco-friendly.
Nishitetsu runs day trips as well to high interest or seasonal highlight places in the area so do check out these special offers at the Tenjin Nishitetsu center. You can book your tickets there as well.
People do not talk loudly on buses in Japan, mostly out of consideration for other passengers and do not talk on your phone and disturb others. Using a phone to text is quite normal, as is listening to music - but not so that it is of a volume to disturb other passengers.
Enjoy seeing the best of Fukuoka using the very convenient and easy way to get around.

To be honest, we were in Fukuoka for only a few days and mainly stayed in the Tenjin area. If we do travel, we usually take the bus. The bus in Fukuoka is fairly efficient and clean. Sometimes the bus maybe late but like most cities around the world, its not always 100% accurate. We mainly took the bus from Tenjin to Hakata Station which was only 100Yen.

Taking the bus at Fukuoka, once you get on the bus you get a ticket and pay when you get off. The ticket will tell the bus drive which station/area you get on.

You will realize the buses are usually very clean and quiet. Maybe if its noisy, its probably tourists like us thats talking. The bus drivers are also very kind and nice, you'll see many of them will have a speaker and talks to the passengers.

Overall, I will recommend taking the bus if possible. Probably saves a lot of walking.

Was in Fukuoka for 7 days and this was our major mode of transport since we were staying in an apartment quite far from the main city (Kusagae bus stop to be exact). The bus stop was closer than the subway station. Very efficient, very reliable.

Since we didnt have an IC card we paid in cash. You enter the bus by the center door, tap your IC card or grab a ticket - the ticket has a number which you refer to on their monitor which shows your fare (the fare changes/goes up the further you travel). The monitor also shows which station the bus is going to stop next. Exit is in the front of the bus next to the driver. Pay by tapping you IC or dropping your ticket together with your cash payment.

No exact change? No problem! You can change your bills in their changer which is next to the driver.

Check their website or Hyperdia on exact time and fares. Google maps was a great help too. You need to know ahead what bus number to take as their route is not indicated in the bus itself. Note, some routes are more expensive so check ahead. Also dont be noisy. In general Japanese are quiet on the bus so we tourists should respect that.

The Nishitetsu Bus covers most of Fukuoka. They have regular services within the city.

If you are not familiar with how the bus system works, here are a few pointers:
1. You enter the middle door and exit through the front door.
2. When you board, you either scan your IC card or take a ticket.
3. You pay when you alight the bus. If you entered with an IC card, you scan your card when you get off. If you took a ticket, you pay with coins. There is a machine next to the driver which will change 1000 yen notes but no higher. You must give the exact amount.

If you want to save, you can buy the 1-day bus pass or the Fukuoka Tourist City Pass (1 day), which covers the subway and MOST bus journeys (not all, read the small print).

Visited Fukuoka twice last year, and found the Nishitetsu bus network to be the most reliable and convenient form of transportation. Pick a destination on Google Maps, and you'll be told which buses you can take from your location. If you don't have data on your phone, stand outside (or inside) any convenience store for free Wi-Fi. Get a day pass and hop on and off at your pleasure. One interesting quick is that engine is shut off at all red lights and bus stops.

If you really want to dive into the Japanese culture, do some homework and use Nishitetsu Bus to travel around the town. It's way cheaper than using JR trains. Their time accuracy is beyond accurate. I mean, super accurate. If they say you will reach your destination by 12.28pm, you will reach by 12.28pm. Why the 28 and not 12.30pm? Well, you have that 2 min time to catch your train.

Good experience.

Nishitetsu is the west rail company that operate in this district, their bus is the most commonly suggested routes in Google maps.

From Fukuoka International Airport, you can take their Airport Bus or their free shuttle to the closest subway.
You can buy a 500 yen return ticket and use it for 2 people as one way. If you didn't buy the return ticket you can pay onboard when leaving the bus at a cost of about 120 yen more. The traffic is fine up to Hakata station, about 15mins, after that the bus stops are frequent and there are traffic jams until Tenjin bus terminal. So total journey time to Tenjin is about 45mins. Where as it could be 20mins if you took the subway route.
Please note from Tenjin bus terminal the airport bus is infrequent at about 1 per hour.

In terms of day pass in the city, I recommend the Fukuoka 1 day pass that includes Nishetetsu rail and bus for 2980 yen.

At other times in the city, just pay for each journey individually by coins. You can change your money on the bus if you do not have the exact fare.

Quiet ride, no cell phone calls inside, driver shuts off the bus engine at every long stop and pulls the handbrake. The restarts when light is green or when passengers are all on board. Announcements are in multiple languages. Remember to get in the bus from the middle entrance and get out from the front next to the driver after paying the bus ride. In case you forget this, or don't know, like me, the driver will tell you to pay after the ride. Four stars for the bus and ride, 5th for turning off the engine at traffic lights.

I ride route no 303, 36, and exclusive route at Daicaifu area, and all of them equipped with courteous drivers. They spoke up every stop, remind passengers the area. There was screen hanging at top front of bus showing each bus stop name, and next stop, with fare accordingly. Also there was a red button at each aisle of seat for you to press for your stop. In all, fare was very affordable too. It showed up quite exact to time frequency time table provided. It was a very good transport tool for you hanging around in the city.
