This was a really neat little stop on Sakurajima. You can see the shrine gate that was buried by volcanic ash years and years ago. It is a small little area and won't take too long to see, but it is really cool.

Shrine gate buried in lava, worth a few minutes of your visit here to understand the scale at which volcanoes eruptions are powerful.

A buried shrine gate reminds of powerful volcano eruption many years ago. It is preserved for historical value.

It has been there buried in ashes for a hundred years. Originally 3 meter high, only the top of the Torii emerges about 1 m above ground. The landmark is well sign posted but you may miss it if you are not attentive.

One of those cool things to see. It seemed pretty far out of the way, but if in the area check it out for sure. I only got a picture from the bus tour I was on, but it was still cool.

Maybe I am crazy, but I thought this was the coolest thing on the island. Can you imagine seeing the past and the future at the same time? I thought it was so cool to be able to see how much land was completely covered...More
