Wonderful experience as we stand looking down into the crater of a live volcano. There is a rope way that will bring you to the top of the volcano. The smell of sulfur is suffocating though when we were at the top of the volcano. There were shelters erected around for one to take shelter if the volcano got unstable!

Cable car or gondola ride was still closed during March 2016. We can only see Mt. Aso from a distance. Not worth going.

always wanted to see this one Coudnt go on cable car as had erupted just before we arrived ,but, it was still great to see, got as near as possible, the drive to it was amazing ,scenery orgasmic ,must have taken 100 photos en-route. The Museum was very well done. Would love to see it at night in full flow.

Some great views of the Caldera on the way up, however sadly only cloud at the top, worth the risk for the view if you get it!

Nice drive to here from Takachiho, somewhat reminiscent of Swiss countryside with cows too. View of billowing smoke from the volcano mouth is cool, but very bummed that we weren't able to go all the way to the crater as this is what all the hype seemed to be about. I get that it's for safety but would have been... More

Okay, it's quite beautiful, but the real treat would be getting close to the volcano. That's impossible. I tried but everytime I was caight by overzealous watchmen.

I never thought I could go so close to an active volcano. You can see the fumes and smell it in the air. The core area is cordoned off as it is too dangerous to go there. It was indeed an experience of lifetime. Word of caution: There is a 3D show in the visitor center priced at JPY500 which... More

I have never imagine that I can reach the caldera of an active volcano very easily just by frequent cable car. (But the bus from JR Aso to the cable car station is not that sequent though). There was a lot of sulphur smell on top with sulphur soaps were selling. On the day I visit on summer, it is... More

Mount Aso and its surrounding terrain is simply jaw dropping. Driving up to it, the lush volcanic landscape, dotted with cattle and horses, is stunning. Mount Aso has one of the largest calderas in the world and one of the five peaks, Mount Naka is still active. It was thrilling to watch the continuous plume of smoke climb high into... More
