The Johor Art Gallery in Jalan Petrie has been closed for many years and I believe it has now moved to the Johor Heritage Foundation on Jalan Sungai Chat. There website still lacks any information in English so I am unable to confirm.

It took some time getting there from our Hotel since for some strange reason, the Waze app had become unresponsive. When we finally arrived, my partner & I were disappointed to see it close. In fact, the Johor Bahru Art Gallery was an abandoned building. Perhaps, we had gone to the old premises. The front door was slightly ajar & we did not have the courage to explore the surroundings especially when it was starting to rain.

Since it was still very much a beautiful historical building, we took a couple of selfies just for remembrance before leaving. The exterior walls of the abandoned Art Gallery building were painted a mixture of grey & white colours. In fact, I daresay that it still looked well-kept considering that it had been abandoned. We couldn’t help feeling disappointed as the building was one of the historical sites in Johor Bahru. We could see the possibilities but it was not meant to be.

I love the art gallery a lot. It is simple and yet prestigious at the same time. A lot of nice paintings.

From a distance, the place looks amazing and elegent. But the staff is so lethergic and indifferent. Staying nearby, my visit to this Gallery was disheartining . It is not aired and open. The place is so dusty. Though Malaysians are proud of our heritage,I truly wish it could be spruced up a bit.

Johore Bahru impresses me as a shoppers' and gourmet paradise for the affluent Singaporeans who flock here during weekends to satisfy their gastronomic indulgence and shopping kicks. It has never occurred to me that the city has her hidden gems that showcase her cultural beauty in the traditional arts.

The Johor Art Gallery is that hidden gem that stand solitarily at one hidden corner without attracting any passer by to want to visit her. But she marvels those who bother to walk in to take a look with her beautiful masterpieces and exquisite arts.

The architectural appearance of this gallery house is a marvel by itself. The intrinsic design was reminiscent of the old colonial British style and it was built in the year 1910 and was the official residence of the then Johor Chief Minister. The color tones of the building convey a tranquil and calm note and project a harmonious sense of proportionality in its outlook.

On display at the compound was a exquisite bullock cart and a huge drum that appear to be an artifact from the historical years. I was attracted to the many outstanding display of Johor born artists. Their paintings showcase the cultural vibrancy of the social life of the people and the old buildings in existence in this part of Johor. Some of the paintings appear to be of abstract arts as I could not discern the meaning of the concerted effort of the artist. I like the use of bold brush of color in some of the oil paintings.

I love the tranquil environment and there was no other visitor when I came. There is ample car park in front of the gallery. The admission is free and I just need to register my name on a visitor's book. I like the historic gallery building and took some photographs before I left.

Constructed in 1910 as Johor Chief Minister official resident, the gallery displays works of art by talented Johor-born artists- paintings, sculptures etc.
There is comfortable reading corner but the reading materials should be upgraded; add the quantity and quality.
In order to attract more visitors, there should be exhibitions, art products for selling and other activities all year round.

There were a couple of local artist artwork on display and a travelling exhibition when I was there. It is a small and cozy place where you have to remove your shoes to get in. It is also not very accessible unless you have a car. The thing good about it is: it's free!
