Worth the hassle
Apr 2020 • Family
Logical once you understand the organisation. Get your ticket. You can do that online for the official price of 45 ringgit one way via one particular website or via some other websites at a premium. You can even book when the shedule is not known yet; it will be available a week or so before the start of the month of travel. Plan to stay a night in Mersing if necessary; there are some nice and cheap hotels available. Alternatively turn up and buy a ticket at the newly opened Mersing Harbour Centre. In high season or on the weekends this may be difficult.

Pick up your ticket at the Centre. Have it registered to your passport and get a boat number on the ticket. Pay your marine conservation fee and pay your tax if the fee and tax people are around, which is not always the case.
Then get a coffee or breakfast or lunch at the café in the Harbour Centre. It's good. Make sure you cross the street to the actual jetty in time (say at least 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time) to get your boardingpass. Don’t be amazed if the ferry is not leaving in time. Expect to wait anywhere between 10 minutes and 1,5 hours because the ferry may not leave at the exact hour. The ferry may be old and small or new and big. The small ones may stop occasionally for unknown reasons. Once on board expect extreme air conditioning, so come prepared with a sweatshirt or shawl. The trip will take about two hours.

Tioman Island is worth the hassle!

The worst Ferry Company I ever experience
Oct 2020
This shouldn't be the first thing that you experience when you come to Tioman Island , It is a shame for a country as Malaysia and also a shame for a incredible paradise as Tioman Island to allow this kind of services,
In resume,
The Ferry is dirty, old, dated, creepy, unsafe,
The staff uneducated, unprofessional, impolite, they are smoking in the entrance of the ferry and trowing their butts to the sea ... are they people? Do they know what that mean for the environment? ...
No SOP for COVID 19 at all
They block the only 2 evacuation routes in case of emergency with luggage
If you are travelling to Tioman don't spoil your trip paying to this guys!! arrange your transfer to the island in any other way and will be worthy and safe!!!!

Lots of room for improvement
Sep 2020 • Family
First the plus points:
• Ticketing ok (booking, collection, price)
• Punctuality is fine (on time. No delay)
• Staff very friendly

The bad part:
• The terminal. My God! It’s 2020 and the place looks like stuck in the 1980’s!
• Dirty toilet (no surprise there)
• Very dirty (again, no surprise)
• Badly maintained. Broken seating, out of order fans etc
• And who the hell design the ferry system? Passenger and luggage from the same door!!?? They need to improve the system. It’s chaotic and old fashioned
• The ferry is in a sorry state
• The authority has to wake up! Obviously they’re just interested in collecting the revenue only
• Overall the ferry is a shame to the nation!

Rubbish Ferry Service
Sep 2020 • Friends
Rubbish ferry service. Please avoid travelling with them. Super disorganized and keep squeezing people into the ferry. No seats and now allowed others to sit at a proper seat.

Please read before booking them. Dont make the same mistake we did.

There are 2 companies from Mersing to Tioman(bluewater and cataferry). We booked as 4 friends that bluewater express as it was around 50Myr per person cheaper than cataferry. And we thought there are 2 companies so service and ferries should be similar. But obviously if something is more expensive there is a reason behind it and we got that point with a quite bad experience.

First: our departure time was 11:00 and other ferry company’s departure was 11:30. There was another bluewater ferry at 10:00 but that 10:00 ferry departed at 11:15(75 minutes delay) after 10:00 ferry departed, other ferry company’s ferry arrived by 11:20 and took all the passengers and departed sharply on time at 11:30(in the pictures red one) Our ferry arrived to port by 11:30 and we departed at 11:55(55 mins delay)

Second: Boats of Bluewater are quite old, they are still in operation surprisingly. During the trip engine failed, and smoke came inside the cabin. After they fixed it our speed was quite slow so expect quite longer trip than written on internet.

Third: There is no seat numbers, sit where you like, if you prefer hot temp sit at back and burn in hell if you like cold air and want to freeze to death sit on upstairs front deck. Windows were quite terrible no clear view for most of the seats. And its not qatamaran so on a weather with waves i believe it will be a rough ride, that is why they hanged lots of black nylon bags in case someone throw up.

First picture shows arrival time of 11:30 cataferry(quality one), second picture departure of 11:30 cataferry, third picture bluewater departure(11:00 ferrry)

Our experience was perfect

Seem to be some hits and misses here... but our experience was faultless. It couldn't have been any easier or any better. Perfect, start to finish.

Worst Ever
Jul 2020
Worst ferry ever. My tioman trip was wonderful but last day spoiled by this terrible ferry company. There's only 2 ferry company running service from Mersing to Tioman (Vice versa), so they don't afraid of losing customer, they don't even have customer service. Boat never on time. Either left early than the departure time, or delayed. We were left behind even we went to Jetty earlier before the departure time. We have to purchased the tickets for next day. The next day we went Jetty 1.5 hr earlier, but the ferry delay 1 hour, no one inform us, at jetty nobody you can asked. You have to just wait wait wait and wait at the Jetty without knowing whether it'll come, until it showed up. 👎

If you wanna travel to Tioman, Try to get another ferry company CATAFERRY instead. Bluewater has many poor reviews on TripAdvisor and Google Reviews, and their instructions were unclear on check in procedure. There are many people experienced missed the ferry with this company. 👎👎

Avoid like the plague
Jun 2020 • Family
In comparison to its competitor Cataferry, Bluewater is really bad. The e-ticketing and check-in system was chaotic. During boarding we were told to take the ferry on the right, as we arrived, we were told to take the one on the left.
There is no social distancing at all during this pandemic time as evident in the photo attached. The cabin felt old, the seats were just okay, and the whole trip was uncomfortable.
In conclusion, get Cataferry as much as possible.

Very very bad experience
Mar 2020 • Family
Took the return trip on 16/3/20 10am from ‘ABC’ to mersing, during boarding crew never inform anything about faulty aircon. The ferry ride was pack to max or might even be over as these not enough seat for everyone, the ferry was design to be air conditioned so imagine how stuffy n hot it was for everyone as there is only 4 door that could be open. Children n elderly vomiting on board due bad conditions for the 2 hrs journey. When confront the ferry crew about the why was the passenger not inform and why they allow the trip to proceed even though the ferry has these problems they even have the cheek to say ‘ Customers only paid for the trip from tioman to mersing , not for the aircon’

Never again for us .

Pilau Tioman unspoilt (duty free) paradise in the south china sea and well worth a visit especially for scuba diving or just chilling. Even if time is no object look for one of the alternatives to Bluewater who run a fleet of old ferries and whos timetable is a work of fiction causing many travellers to miss conections even when building several hours of contingency into their schedules.
