This historical building is located in front of the Istana Balai Besar & said to be the oldest stone building. It was built during the reign of Sultan Muhammad III.
“Pitis” in Kelantan dialect means money. Apparently, the Kelantan state had used “pitis” as their currency in 1906. “Pitis” is made of tin. Round in shape with a hole in a middle, the value of 1 sen then was equivalent to 5 pieces of “pitis”. Bank Pitis was used to store treasury notes & the State’s important documents.
In 1909, the issuance of “pitis” coins came to a stop as the British began to issue money for the Straits Settlements. Bank PItis was no longer in used when the 1st commercial bank of Kelantan was established in 1912. The commercial bank was called “The Mercantile Bank of India Ltd”. It was also known as the “Grouper Bank”.
Now, this masonry building stands as a historical reminder of Kelantan’s rich past.

This small building used to be the treasury building in Kelantan. It's a good stopover to take some pictures while sightseeing around Kota Bharu. It's located in front of the Grand Palace
