A visit here is to no avail and will leave you thirsty as Big John has shut up shop and retired.
However there is some renovation underway at the moment and it may be the bar will open under new management at some time on the future.
Pity really as it was a nice place for a beer .

Dropped in for a quick cold drink on a very hot day whilst my wife was browsing stores nearby during the heritage walk.

Nice rustic English themed pub. Beer was cold and I was the only patron.

This establishment also owns the Bed & Breakfast across the road.

“What do you want?” – that was the way I was greeted by the owner (John) when I walked into the bar!
I was shocked, at first… but as my friends was already in the bar…. I just politely asked for an Erdinger beer but… somehow still felt unwelcomed!

However after a few drinks…. we started talking to him and we realised he wasn’t that bad… and maybe that was the old Northern English way of getting things done at a bar!

As we were leaving the place, he even suggested on where to eat and how to get around Ipoh!

Great place to relax with a beer. Went there Friday and Saturday evening, live music and good atmosphere. Met the owner, John, for a pleasant talk. He also perform as a guest singer in the band.

It's best to sit at the upper floor when the band plays. Didn't eat at Big Johns, just went there for drinking. Great place to hang out in Ipoh.

After sunset, after the visitors thronging the mural trail and eats have left, this is the place to go for drinks and live music.

Visited the bar last night for a live performance, with no expectations. No complaints with the establishment in general, however the owner John might need to look into developing some manners. Nasty humour I can tolerate and respond in kind, however his flavour of xenophobia and lack of respect leaves very little to save this place.

The friends and I have heard about this place from our music mates. Yesterday we made our way from Kl to Ipoh in hopes of having a good time at big Johns. But what they've failed to mention was about the owner. Big John was a big dick. He's rude and doesn't care about his guests feelings . He questions guests orders, belittles choices of orders and such. He's an extreme disappointment to the service industry. Will never be a fan of big johns.

John the owner is from Wigan in the North of England, he is friendly and has a great sense of humour....typical of 'Northerners' The food is freshly prepared and served fast. There is a good selection of local beer in stock plus bottles of real English ale like London Pride and ESB which you seldom see in Malaysia. The music is always playing and weekends it gets very busy with very good live bands. Give this place a go for great beer, music and decent food and snacks and of course the famous 'Northern' sense of humour and hospitality......just one tip When you hear John's accent don't ask him if he is from Manchester!

Good location, friendly waiter. Food's average, decor & atmosphere nothing to shout about even though interestingly it was a hardware shop in the past. Nice concept to host live bands but owner who rudely questioned my friend and I, dining customers, whether we intended to 'copy his place' when we were taking photos of the stage and musicians preparing their instruments for a later performance left us perplexed, bemused and determined to share the unpleasant encounter. If you do not wish anyone to take photographs in your bar just say so, politely.

Good music
Arrogant owner- visited on a number of occasions, he's always the same.
Recent visit caused me to leave without purchasing anything
Barman was friendly was waitress was unpleasant and superior.
Erratic opening hours
There are much better places- more friendly and accommodating than here- extremely disappointing
