About
Ipoh World (IpohWorld) is an education-based, not-for-profit organisation established in 2004 to promote awareness and appreciation of Perak, the Silver State of Malaysia and its unique, diverse and rich heritage, with particular focus on Ipoh and the Kinta Valley. In 2006 we ran our first public exhibition "The Story of Ipoh: From Feet to Flight", in cooperation with Darul Ridzuan Museum. Since then, supported by sponsorship, we have run several more exhibitions while continuing to seek further financial support for a permanent, lively and interesting heritage gallery for Ipoh, thus enhancing both education and tourism. This current project, our first permanent, museum quality exhibition is our first step to fulfilling this objective. Advance booking is recommended as space in the building is limited. You may book via our website by clicking on Exhibitions or by the QR Code on our brochure. It is quick and easy and you receive a booking confirmation by return.

- Christine L2 contributionsFabulous and fascinating museum in IpohWe visited on our third day in Ipoh, which was great because we’d already explored the town and were keen to learn more about its history. The house was beautifully renovated with installations that helped us get a sense of its history and the guided tour was very informative and interesting. It’s also clearly a labour of love by the many volunteers! Highly recommended.Dear Christine L, thank you for your review on Tripadvisor. - Keh Ni T5 contributionsImmersive experience of Ipoh’s rich historyWe were passing by the museum by chance. The guide asked us if we wanted to come in for a free tour. We gladly accepted. Overall the tour guide gave us a good immersive view of ipoh history. There were stories ranging from tin mining, gambling, rich men lives/activities, artifacts and others. The place was refurbished and was adapted and designed with consideration with the olden times. The tour made us appreciate and imagine the olden times of Ipoh. Definitely a must go for all. We had a good ~1hr spent understanding Ipoh rich history. 👍👍👍Dear Keh Ni T, thank you for your review on Tripadvisor. We are glad you had an 'immersive experience' at Han Chin Pet Soo. It was entertaining and enlightening to learn about what life was like back then. He brought the historic characters to life and we had a wonderful time. The museum itself was in good condition with some pets restored, and contained furnishing from days of old.Dear Summer N, thank you for your review on Tripadvisor. Just 45 minutes with the knowledgeable guide will immerse you in the world of tin mining, from discovery, to mining methods, towkays and the four vices. Beautifully restored interiors and exterior. - TravellingDaisyDazeSingapore, Singapore1 contributionA must-do for history and culture buffs!Loved the tour! Our guide Leong was knowledgeable and engaging as he shared about the Hakka people who made their fortunes from the tin-mining boom in Ipoh. We learnt about the tin mining process and how the people migrated, worked and lived. Lots of artifacts to view from that era too, gd for those who are nostalgic or want to show their children what people used in the old daysDear TravellingDaisyDaze, thank you for your review on Tripadvisor. - Serene C1 contributionEducational and entertaining! Shows us the way of the rich towkays and the struggles of the tin miners.I enjoyed my first visit there in 2022 and this time in 2023, I was bringing 5 other friends who were visiting Ipoh for the first time. I thought it would be a good way to introduce them to the city and how the Hakkas forged an indelible mark on the tin mining history of the place. An added bonus - Mr Leong, our guide was also clear and witty in his presentation.Dear Serene C, thank you for your review on Tripadvisor. We are glad you enjoyed your visit at Han Chin Pet Soo. His talk was very informative and he interspersed it with little jokes which kept us amused and informed all at the same time. The mansion is very well maintained despite its age. Don't forget to admire the floor tiles! Definitely will encourage my friends to visit the mansion and take in the tour.Dear Meander67021212036, thank you for your review on Tripadvisor. Excellent! Not only you can clearly feel the passion from the guide while she was explaining the history of the museum, but also being able to understand the brief history of this beautiful city. (Didn't remember Ipoh was called Epau back to 1800's..)
IMO, the Ipoh government really needs to cooperate with the team who operates this museum. They are doing a good job in preparing and providing a good quality of tour guide, unlike other sightseeing where visitors can only read the history by themselves either online or through the story board.

A heritage building of almost 100 years, where some of the features still remained from back then such as the tiles on the floor and window frames.
It was a gentlemen club of those days, where only tin mining tycoons gathered to relax and network. Here they indulged in vices (or so-called entertainment of their time) such as smoking opium and gambling (the gambling licence is still valid until today).
The museum covers 3 levels, with a display of Ipoh's mining history where you also learn about the mining process and life of the people involved in the mining industry. This is done through physical showcases well-explained by the tour guide and exhibits recreated thru sculptures, wall murals and photos too.
It's a 1 hr tour and I've learnt so much, highly recommended for anyone visiting Ipoh for the first time. The tour has to be pre-booked via their website in advance, there are fixed tour times and limited availability. There's no specified ticket price, it's on a donation basis at the end of the tour as you exit. It's so good you'll want to donate to support the maintenance of this museum to keep it going.

I learnt more about tin-mining and the Hakka community than I thought I wanted to know (having studied the history in primary school), and it was super interesting. Love the building and everything has been kept original as far as possible, so it was atmospheric. You'd have to use your imagination as to the towkays' shenanigans inside though, our excellent guide Leong was maybe too polite to elaborate and the mannequins only give a rough idea. Highly recommended, particularly on a week day where it would probably be a smaller group and you could take all the pictures you want.

The museum is located in the old town area of Ipoh. Although it is open to the public, visitors are required to make online reservations in advance as there are limited sessions available each day. Each guided tour session lasts for one hour, and once the session begins, the doors are closed to prevent other visitors from entering. The guides provide articulate and detailed explanations about the history of Ipoh, starting from the migration of the Hakka people to the tin mining era and the dark times of Ipoh's past. The museum consists of three floors with some slightly steep staircases, which might be a bit challenging for elderly visitors. Nevertheless, it is one of the best museums I have ever visited in Malaysia. Even though admission is free, they accept voluntary donations.

Friendly museum guides giving detailed explanations to their best of their knowledge on the history of the hakka recreation club and its pioneer leaders. there is no fixed entrance fees and visitors are encourage to donate at their own discretion and RM10.00 per adult contribution is encouraged. Regret to note that many visitors did not give any donations on the way out which is a great dampener to the enthusiastic guides and the private museum really need contribution funds for the maintenance of the place.

I really enjoyed this guided tour. The tour guide was clear and informative and really brought to life the characters and stories from Old Ipoh. The house itself is also very beautiful, with scenes set up showing the different activities that would have taken place there. The museum covers a little bit of everything, from vices like gambling and opium smoking to the tough jobs done in the tin mines, and the migration of the Hakka people from China to Ipoh. I would definitely recommend visiting here if you are interested in the town's history and seeing what life was really like here in the past.

Located in the old town area of Ipoh, this is a must-visit place. Basically summarizes the tin-mining history in Ipoh and how the Hakka Chinese settled in the Kinta Valley. The tour guide in Han Chin Pet Soo is very informative and friendly as well. No fixed ticket price as well, as the ticket price is in the form of donation i.e. you free to donate them whatever amount you feel is appropriate without pressure. :-)

wow, the guide was very enthusiastic about the whole place. It is not easy to show that given he probably give hundreds of these tours
The mansion was well kept. The displays were professionally done and able to give visitors the feel of the tin mining era. The guided tour was certainly very interesting if you are into such history

The reservation is easy and the whatsapp response is quick and helpful. Full flexibility and time given to take photos and read the informative sharing. The guide is excellent in sharing interesting history and stories of the past. Walking around the historical building and exhibits help to connect with the stories shared by the guide. It is very clean and SOPs are well followed. It is free of charge but of course you can offer a token of donation to help in maintaining the building.

Hello may I know any activities kids of 6 and 9 can do here please? And what can we do here please? From the post, is it book a tour and follow tour guide explaining the history? , 😁 sorry not familiar with the place. Any place to dine in there?

Hello,
There isn't any activities for kids. They would not find it interesting at all. For adults, the tour is guided and you must make a reservation in advanced via their website. We found it interesting but kids would hate it.

Hello, guys. I want to ask whether taking photos inside the establishment is allowed and also is there any online e-book or website that you could suggest for further reading about Ipoh?
Written 19 March 2021
Hi Ng C, apologies for not replying to you in Chinese. With regards to tickets, we do not charge any entrance fees but we do welcome a suggested donation of RM10 per person at the end of the tour which is not compulsory but does help us with the upkeep of the building.

Only just got your question. It is always best to book at our website.
Written 27 June 2017
The most we can fit in at one time is 60 pax divided into 3 concurrent groups and the shortest tour like that would be one hour.
We can always make special arrangements if you give us advance notice.

Can a solo traveller make a booking to this tour? and is there any fee to pay this tour?

They prefer that you go thru the guided tour which we found quite fun and informative. Our 8 yr daughter also enjoyed the experience , taking pictures and having the adults in the group explaining how all the old things that we hadn't seen since our childhood used to work. Honestly when the guide said that it was going to take an hour and a half i didn't believe it could or that we would stay that long, but you really do find a lot of historical things to linger on. Now we didn't book or register prior to showing up, so we were lucky that they had staff there when we showed up .. they run the tours at set hours, and as i think i noted in my review the doors are usually closed to maintain the air conditioning , so don't be put off it the placed looks like its closed.. ring or knock and wait , someone should show up quickly. Also you might want to go next door to the medicinal tea house after your tour .. not quite as long but interesting and you can pick up some healthy tea .. Concubine Lane is right across as well but we had run out of time.
