A beautiful place, a street, an embankment with a row of modern skyscrapers. This is from afar. Who brought me here at 13.00? For some reason I chose this hottest period of the day. I was hoping for a breeze and some clouds. The clouds have gone and the breeze has disappeared. I ended up in real hell. Complete calm and 34 degrees in the shade. But this very shadow is not there. The trees are all young. There are no crowns. A 20-minute walk under the scorching sun was enough for me. For another 10 minutes, I, gradually softening and melting as I went, like a piece of butter, ran to the nearest building. The coolness of the shopping center turned out to be heaven! In order. The entire embankment, all 3 kilometers, is now being rebuilt. A piece of approximately 800 meters is ready. A large tongue of sand, refined and draped with greenery, on the site of an old bay. Rare trees, from the crowns of which there is no shadow yet. But everything was done very well. For the tenth anniversary. The tile is adjusted. There is a walking promenade below, right next to the water. An excellent multifunctional large children's playground and a skate track next to it. Work continues further west along the coast. The former low-water area has already been filled up, partially fenced off from the water by fender slabs, and equipment is actively working on it. The time will come - the work will end, the trees will grow, and then this is where paradise will be.

We had reservations on Gurney Drive after reading so many negative reviews. It turns out that it is still the prime place to sample Malaysian street food. The small area has a nice collection of hawker stalls that serve quick meals from barbecue to Penang's signature char kway teow. It is also quite easy to find a table now and enjoy freshly made delicacies. Price is simply cheap.

My family and I visited Penang during the Raya holidays in August. As usual we headed for Gurney Drive for food. We were happy to find a table as the place was very crowded. My husband went to order char kuay teow nearby while my 10 year old son sat at the table. My daughter and I went to get some drinks about 5 feet away. Just as we were starting to eat, the operator from another drinks stall approached us and started telling us very loudly and rudely that we cannot sit at that table as we had ordered drinks from across. He continues to harass us until we had to leave and as we could not find another table, we had to finish our food standing up. Later on, we saw another operator telling off some patrons for moving some stools to another table. Why do Penangnites put up with this treatment? Are you suckers for punishment or you are so apathetic and couldn’t be bothered? Gurney Drive is overrated – average food and free flow of abuse. So farewell Penang and Gurney Drive. We won’t be returning any time soon.

You can't simply sit anywhere at this place to eat your food even though there are plenty of empty tables everywhere and they all looked the same. Each table has an "invisible" stall owner names on them and you won't know until some one came over and chase you away. We bought a plate of indian rojak but we were chased from table to table, we were told that we sat at the "wrong" table and we didn't get any drinks from this place - which was an unwritten rule here! The whole thing was getting too difficult for us and we felt very unwelcome here and so we took our business somewhere else after sampling the indian rojak and satay. The food quality was poor and very overpriced. We won't recommend this place at all, it's just a waste of time. We also won't bow down to their ridiculous unwritten rule! Luckily there are many other food courts, hawker centres and coffee shops that served up reasonably priced and better quality food then here and the best part was you can sit at any tables without having to buy a drink and they have no such silly rule like this hawker place! Their silly rule has chased away their customers and gave themselves a bad reputation.

It' a long beach promenade, apart from an evening stroll after dinner, it's idea for early morning walks and jogging, great veiws accross the bay, although when the tides out , its muddy! From Geogre town end, there's various resterants and bars, with a night food market at the other, that's visited by locals and visitors alike, as you come from the roundabout towards the traffic lights, there'a Mc Donalds. If u go by car, there's parking bays all the way along Gurney Drive, it's scratch card parking, cheap to park, expensive if you don't pay!! "Fine" it's buzzy and a good focal point for all to go. Buses run to and fro from Batu and George town. If you found this helpfull, I'd apreciate a helpfull vote.

There is a crazy war going on . A war involving tables and self created borders. Some rude traders will pull away your chair if you do not order from them. Takeaway solves that problem. Good place for soya bean drinks , otak -otak , grilled charcoal roasted squid ,sugar cane drink and rojak . Assam laksa is geared towards KL visitors.

I have been to Gurney Drive 3 times in the last two years. Gurney Drive is supposed to be famous for tourists to experience authentic Penang hawker food, but at my most recent visit all the standards have dropped. We had the char kway teow, oyster omelette, Penang prawn noodle (or Hokkien mee), lor bak, and noodles in soup. Each dish tastes different from how they are supposed to taste, as if the hawkers are cutting costs by substituting or eliminating some ingredients that are vital to the taste of the dish. My perception was confirmed by a local taxi driver who told us that all the "real" hawkers had moved elsewhere. If you are in Penang for the food, I suggest staying at Traders, which is in the middle of Penang's business district, and within walking distance to a number of small local coffeeshops where the locals (not tourists) eat. Here, in these coffeeshops, you will be able to find the "real" Penang food. In some instances, you would even be able to smell the aroma of the foods from across the road. Only visit Gurney Drive if you want to feel like a tourist in Penang.

we do not like Gurney Drive simply because there are too many cars, walking in car fumes is not our way of recreating and the fact that the Gurney mud-flats are stinking to high heavens! then there is the haze, Penang's famous nature disaster! the only good thing is that one can flee into one of the two shopping malls but that is just about it!

Well, I have been to this Gurney Drive for numerous of time since many years. At first, I found this place had variety, spoiled with tremendous of choices and good tasty food. However, recently, due to more & more people flocking into this place, the quality of food is slowly diminishing. In the very last visit, they were too many stalls selling the same food which end up, it could have 3 - 4 stalls providing the same food or drinks. Due to the crowd, we need to stand and wait for sitting place... not easy to grab one during peak period. Now heard from fellow tripadvisor member's review, now they even have their own "territory" to do their business...cannot cross line to each other. This is very sad...which become more ugly. I still remember, when I was ordering a Char Koey Teow, I need to join a long queue. Until my turn, I only realised the Char Koey Teow was being fried in "bulk"... means they did not do it plate by plate but fried them in a big pan and divided into smaller portion. This kind of frying has definitely affected the food quality, which it was indeed. The saltiness was pretty plain and I did not see those quality mixing of egg and cockles in it. The taste was out, so did the presentation. This was just one of them, and many more following suit. From then, I did not go back to Gurney Drive. Owing to over crowded of patron and expediting fulfilling all orders, they are looking for shortcut to meet the demand. This is pretty bad. But still they are some food still commendable. I hope, they realized the consequences... but still people will not care...tourist would not know... and Gurney Drive famous name will not go down to the drain that easily... because its name has been built in decades...but those frequented there, will know... for those need another good hawker centre option... try New Lane, off Macalister street... just outside the Sunway Hotel... the food over there are good... happy eating.

Will Gurney Drive will be open on the first celebration of Chinese New Year?
Written 31 January 2018
Hi "Vivi X": Gurney Drive is a long road along the Straits of Malacca. On the Western end there are two large shopping Malls and a food court. On the Eastern end there are many condos and a few hotels. In the Middle, there are some very interesting places to eat. The shops in the shopping Malls are open every day of the year.... BUT, I would suspect that many [definitely not all] of the Chinese workers and owners may be celebrating!! There will also be many, many people celebrating on Gurney Drive and elsewhere in Penang!!!
I hope that this was helpful....

Hi:
Interesting question.... It really depends on what you appreciate/like to do when you travel!! Chulia street is a historically active, diverse street that is frequented by locals--- and not many tourists. The restaurants are more "authentic" and locally owned. Gurney drive is more modern with two very large Malls, many restaurant chains and lots of imported stuff for "tourists" [some of whom are also Malaysian--- not from Penang. It also has a long gracious walk along what was once the Straits of Malacca-- but is now a huge "land reclamation project"!!
I prefer Chulia street to wonder down and get a feel for what Penang culture is, and has been like!!

Hi, my wife and I are interested in staying in your hotel for 3 nights in early September.
You advertise that you do tours. Can you give some examples of where you go and what are the prices involved?
Thank you.
