About
What better way to learn how to make Malaysian food with Nazlina, who wrote a comprehensive book on laksa in Malaysia! We start the class with a wet market tour following by a hands-on cooking class. 8.00 am to 1 pm. RM280 per person with a market tour. (via PayPal or WISE transfer through DuitNow or to my email address) This is the 14th year the class is operating. Please book at least a week ahead to confirm your spots. The classes are held on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you wish to book on other days, please enquire ahead for the possibility. Prepayment is compulsory because people who book at the very last minute also tend to cancel. It is hard for us to plan for the logistics when this happens. Your co-operation is much appreciated. Join us for fun, and educational immersion of Penang street food scene and local cultures. Bring your positive energy and enthusiasm to learn with me, and I will return them a thousandfold! See you guys soon!

- Sandy Pepper4 contributionsA fascinating morning with NazlinaWe had a fascinating morning with Nazlina. We began by touring the markets of Georgetown to buy food, after which we returned to her house to prepare and eat our meal. I’m no cook, but I learned a lot, and even ended up with a very satisfactory lunch - way better than anything I’ve ever cooked before. A great way to learn a bit about Malaysia and Malaysian food.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 February 2024
- Frances B6 contributionsFalling in love with Nyonya cooking!Nazlina's guided tour through old Georgetown wet market to purchase supplies and get a feel for the local food history really demonstrated what a special place and tour this was. Cooking at her home was both intimate and enlightening. Never knew what it took to crack a coconut and harvest it's meat, much less how absolutely delicious it would be in Pajeri naas. My niece, nephew and I are still talking about the experience. Thank you for sharing your love of Penang and food with us. We'll be back.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 February 2024

- 小星星42 contributionsRecommend to everyone to participate1. The teacher took us to have an Indian breakfast early in the morning, special cakes with spiced milk tea, and introduced us to the sauces that go with the cakes. 2. After breakfast, the teacher took us to the vegetable market. He also bought various local foods for us to eat. It was a full morning before the cooking class. He also introduced various local desserts and snacks in detail. Food, and also introduces various vegetables, fruits and sauces to us, and the teacher will keep buying and shopping all the way. He will feel very happy. While buying for us to eat, he also buys ingredients used in cooking, or We bought lotus root and jackfruit for our after-dinner fruit, as well as local pastries for our after-dinner dessert. We also saw super huge bananas. It was a very rich market trip. 3. After that, we went to the cooking class to learn how to cook. The class was held in a semi-outdoor area that looked like a courtyard or a small garden. The teacher in the courtyard planted various herbs or vegetables. The teacher introduced them to us. I feel very special and magical. 4. The teacher taught us step by step how to cook delicious tomato rice, how to fry fried chicken by ourselves, and how to make a very refreshing and delicious salad. The process was a very solid learning course. I felt the teacher’s love for cooking and followed it. Passionate about teaching cooking. 5. After the dishes were cooked, the teacher also prepared some food that was very local. You need to pack all the ingredients yourself and stuff it into your mouth. Although I have forgotten the name, it is really delicious. I am deeply impressed by it again. I can feel the teacher's attention to details. 6. The food we cooked, the staple salad and meat, tasted very harmonious, making it a very enjoyable lunch. 7. This was a great value-for-money gourmet trip, and it was also an in-depth local cooking feast. The food created a profound connection with the culture here. I am very grateful to the teacher.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 16 April 2024
- Excursion227555994681 contributionGreat cooking class! This is a must do experience in Penang! This is not your ordinary cooking course. Nazlina introduced us to so many flavours and herbs as we strolled through the local market grocery shopping for the class. Nazlina made cooking such an enjoyable experience and taught us so much about the culture. Food was delicious and she was extra generous, offering us homemade dessert and other delicacies from her pantry. We really enjoyed it!Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 29 April 2024

- Experience8163363 contributionsExcellent cooking experience for a foodie, highly recommendNazlina was an excellent teacher, very knowledgeable and generous of her time and skills. She took my mother and I to a local cafe for thosai and then on to a food market to collect ingredients for our nasi lemak, char koay teow and salads that we made later in the day. She took her time to explain each step of the dishes and happily answered our many questions! The nasi lemak was our favourite, the rice was insanely good! She kindly sent us the recipes afterwards and advised us to see the nearby botanical garden as we were so close. We were finished by 1pm - a great morning spent experiencing how to make Malaysian cuisine. Highly recommend.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 26 May 2024
- NorthStar452781873311 contributionAn amazing culinary experience!!We signed up on a whim for a cooking class with Nazlina. Little did I know we would be entering a Malaysian cuisine odyssey of great proportions!! Nazlina is not only one of the world’s foremost experts on Malaysian cuisine, her knowledge of regional and international haute cuisine is profound. Nazlina has a special knack for simply explaining some very technical cooking techniques. If you are debating whether to sign up for a cooking class, just do it. You will have a GREAT time!!Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 June 2024
- AhaPetaluma, California5 contributionsGreat experience to learn about the history and culture of PenangWe had such a great time cooking with Nazlina. The day started out with a breakfast and walking tour (with local snacks!) around town picking up ingredients and visiting the markets. My children (7 and 9) had such a great time visiting the food stalls and learning about Penang. Then came the cooking - it was such a wonderful and educational experience. Nazlina was very knowledgeable and hands on with teaching the cooking class. She also made it fun for my children to learn how to cook. I highly recommend signing up when you’re in Penang. You’ll learn a lot about the history, culture and food of Penang and best of all you’ll learn some new dishes!Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 June 2024
- Loretta C389 contributionsFabulous foodie fun!We finally got to do a cooking class with Nazlina after booking it 5 years ago! Obviously, COVID prevented that. Nazlina was a star, and with excellent communication, she held our booking until we could finally make it. She was fun, witty, and knowledgeable, and we learnt a lot from her about Malay cuisine. A great morning shopping st the market, then taking us back to her home to cook in a delightful setting. The photos speak for themselves. The food was delicious!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 June 2024

The afternoon with Nazlina was great! In advance, she responded to our wishes about what we wanted to cook and made everything possible. We were at the market and she explained everything to us, which was great! She is an experienced cook and net conversation partner. The food was the best we had on our trip. Thanks for everything:)

My wife and I joined three others to make a small and friendly group. We toured local Georgetown markets with Nazlina imparting knowledge on many aspects of local food and life in general.
We had breakfast at a locals’ restaurant then went back to Nazlina’s home for the cooking class.
We prepared a few dishes under the supervision of Nazlina then sat down together as a group to consume them.
The experience was both informative and fun throughout, I would recommend it to anyone wanting to gain a greater understanding of Penang/Malaysian food.

There were two of us at Nazlina's cooking class and we were 100% thrilled.
It started at 8:00 a.m. at the market with an excellent Roti Canai breakfast while Syamil, Nazlina's employee, told us about the local cuisine.
We then went with Nazlina to the nearby market where we visited a few stalls and got lots of interesting information about products and preparation methods.
We then took a taxi to the cooking school where we cooked, tasted and enjoyed a lot.
We can recommend the tour 100%. The combination of market tour and cooking class is perfect.
Thank you very much

My husband and I spent a delightful time with Nazlna on her cooking course. It started with a delicious breakfast at a great local cafe where we found out it was Nazlina’s birthday. Nazlina then took us through various markets in Georgetown to buy the freshest of ingredients for our cooking class. The class took place in her open air kitchen where we were expertly shown step by step how to cook four delicious dishes. Char kwey teow, chicken rendang, turmeric rice and a vegetable dish. We absolutely loved it and it was a highlight of our stay in Georgetown- would highly recommend doing this cooking course!

An excellent way to learn about Malaysian cuisine and hands on experience of cooking some dishes. We started off with a tour of a wet market where Nazlina was fantastic in explaining not only the ingredients being purchased for our meal but also taking time to point out various fruit, vegetables and fish. We then went to her house where several cooking stations were set up undercover in her garden. Following her explanations and demonstrations, everyone could prepare the spices and cook the food. Finally, the group went into her dining room where we all enjoyed the food; beef rendang, Nasi lemak with Sambal and four angle bean salad. To finish with a delicious meal after a complete cooking experience. Would highly recommend!

If you’re looking for an authentic, hands on and way above friendly experience look no further and book yourself a tour and a cooking class with Nazlina. I was expecting a short stop at the market but got a full fledged around a few blocks tour including descriptions of exotic fruit and vegetables and bits about history and culture of the Malaysian people.
Nazlina was a very knowledgeable tour guide, flexible and stopped at all the perfect spots as if knowing intuitively what her guests might be interested in. We brought all freshly bought groceries to her spacious outdoor kitchen and began cooking. She explained every step well and gave us instructions without being overbearing. We made a chicken and seafood curry laksa soup, traditional nasi lemak dish and steamed banana and sweet potatoes dumplings for dessert. Nothing I ate before (either at home or fancy restaurants) compared to the laksa soup. It was one of the most delicious dishes I’ve ever tasted and one of my proudest moments to make something so complex in flavors and looking amazing at the same time. We also received the recipies to replicate at home - which with a few substitutions can be easily followed.
Nazlina really goes above and beyond - including ordering a grab taxi for me to get home and sharing a few videos on sustainable farming and biodiversity conservation. Highly recommend!

Nazlina is a very seasoned chef and teacher for Malaysian cuisine, my friends and I had a great time cooking at her cozy house.
We met in the morning for breakfast in an Indian restaurant, Nazlina then took us to wet market for shopping. She introduced local ingredients & bought snacks for us to try. The atmosphere of class was relaxed, we enjoyed the food we cooked for lunch afterwards! The overall experience is wonderful!

We spent a wonderful morning with Nazlina, experiencing the wholesale markets, the roti manufacturer, shopping for the ingredients to the recipes we had decided to make, which were customized to suit the tastes of our two children (age 8 and 10). Nazlina is a very engaging and was especially charming with the kids, trusting that they could rise to the challenge of chopping, and kneading, and cooking. Note that you do have to pay in full for the class ahead of time, but Nazlina handles everything very professionally, and will email you the full recipes at the end of the day. A great glimpse into tasting Penang.

Booked the night before, Nazlina was very swift with her response. Which was great, as the next day we found ourselves on a market with one of the best guides we had!
So the market was the start, the best was yet to come… a great workshop with good conversations, fantastic tips and tricks and the food… the food. We can pat ourselves on the back, but without the help of Nazlina we wouldnt have been able to put this on the table. It was just amazing!
Nazlina took the time for us, we finished around 7pm (started around 2:30pm).
Time well spend! Thank you Nazlina for a great afternoon and a fantastic dish. We enjoyed the workshop and the conversations. And would recommend everyone to join one of your classes!

My partner and myself took a class with her. It was a very informative and fun experience. We had several tasty snacks going through the market. We loved her outside kitchen setup and the recipes. We cooked a vegan variant and it was no problem 🌿
