- AngusPhuaSingapore, Singapore133 contributionsGood FoodAffordable and tasty food at Chulia Street. It was very crowded and cars still use the road even as people were eating along the streets. Not the most hygienic of places, but you get to try authentic local food. We tried the wanton mee, char koay teow and oyster omelette. The wanton mee at the entrance of the street certainly did not disappoint. Spent only RM31 there and had a really good meal for two. However, there was a lot of touting and the vendors were telling everyone that they have to order a drink or they are not allowed to sit at the tables. Not sure if that is true - but generally, anyone is allowed to sit anywhere they want even though they may not order from the stall right in front of them.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 November 2023

There is so much local food here and the food here is so diverse as well. For those who like to have a beer etc there are a couple of bars and cafes in this area as well. I am sure that almost traveler to Penang had visited this area. Nice👍👍👍Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 12 December 2023

Chulia Street by day is nothing special, but at night it comes alive, combining old Penang and wonderful street food stalls with a bustling hip and trendy feel. Food is cheap and made there and then. Seating is on plastic stools and tables on the road!
No doubt it is for the tourists, but it this street gives you a great insight into what Georgetown is all about, and is very close to Love Lane which is worth a walk down too (more modern bars and restaurants, the odd shop etc).

connected with the famous Love Lane. Along Chulia Street there are full of local food stalls: Wantan Mee, Hokkien Mee, Char Koey Teow, Lok Lok, Apom, Yong Tao Fu, Nasi Lemak, coconut milkshake, and Manchester United Burger Stall. It is happening during the weekend as there are a lot of foreign tourists hanging around having beer along the love lane. You w can feel yourself like a tourist while walking on chulia street

Went to visit Chulia Street in the evening to try out the local street food and was pleasantly surprised to see that the entire street is filled with hipster cafes & bistros as well!
We focused on the street food and were lucky to get in before the peak dinner crowd due to the limited seating capacity for the street food corner. We tried several of the local street food favourites and I really like 2 of the dishes; namely the lor bak and the sambal la la. These 2 dishes were bursting with flavours!
As for the other dishes, so were quite nice, others not so much.
Overall, quite enjoy the street food dining experience. Worth a try for tourists seeking local experiences.

I really wanted to love this place but we didn’t. Every time we walked there - day or night - we saw rats sometimes alive sometimes dead. While I get there are rats in all big cities seeing them in the daytime was a surprise. We stated wearing heavier shoes to walk through as I didn’t want one to run over our feet. I don’t know if it was coincidence or not but we didn’t see any rats elsewhere in Georgetown .

The street has various Penang local food like char kuey teow, tong shui, satay and so on. The price is a bit high because it is also considered as a tourist spot. But the food is very localize and typical Penang style. The place is worth to be visited and try to taste the food.

Chulia Street or Lebuh Chulia is one of those places that will need multiple visits. The street changes character from day to night. Streets that branch off Chulia are so interesting too like Love Lane and Carnavon etc.
We like the street food, the ambience. Things have changed much since covid. Still a beautiful place to explore.

It’s the famous street food of Pinyang, where the search comes first. It’s actually like a small street and at night there are carts standing on both sides of the street, while in the middle of the street cars can still run. We choose to sit at any table. Sometimes people from different stores offer menus to us, and they order to pay for the con, when a lot of people might have a table with others.
