The main stairs or entrance were closed for repair. Went up another route close by near bag packer hotel or hostel; also undergoing repair, but walkable with care. The Signal Hill Observatory is a small area, which is closed. Similar views from surrounding area. The views of the city from the hillside was nice, but nothing to go crazy about. Good to go by foot for the exercise. There looks to be construction of an elevated platform being built; once that is built, access may be nicer and safer?

I took the easy way, went to the observatory area via Grab and walk down the main staircase downhill. The staircase is really in bad condition with missing/worm out planks event 10m or so. Though the lookout area is blocked off for upgrading, I am still take to catch a vantage view from the bench area.
Walked to the stairs to a sumptuous breakfast to Gaya St, a short 10min walk away.

Started out with a visit to the Atkinson Clock Tower around 5pm and then walked up the road from there to Signal Hill. Was definitely glad I had taken that route after experiencing the stairs down from the Hill (lovely forested hillside but steep, seemingly endless wooden stairs, some broken steps...it would have been a tiring climb). Good viewpoint for an overview of center town with park benches to sit on and a small refreshment area with tables.

After sending our luggage to the hotel, we made our way to Signal Hill Observatory Platform, the highest point in Kota Kinabalu with a high-roofed platform. It is a lookout point where one can get a panoramic view of the city underneath the airy decked platform which is shaped in the form of a UFO overlooking Kota Kinabalu & the South China Sea.
It was quite a climb from the roads below & thank goodness our trusted rental car was able to do the job. Unfortunately, parking was a problem. There was no proper parking area. Hence, we had to park the car at the roadside which was quite dangerous.
The Observatory Platform was in bad shape. It looked closed & abandoned. We weren’t able to enter. However, there were a few metal seats outside the platform which we sat on to enjoy the view.
It is a shame that this tourist attraction is not well maintained.

As others have said, the view is mostly blocked by tall buildings. There is only about 6 car spaces for parking. A small dirty looking cafe. Toilets locked, but you could smell them. Might be better to see the view at night. Long, narrow and windey road to get there.

Why do I say close, but healthy? To your knowledge, this is the jogging track me whenever weekend or spare time. Many who visit this place, especially in the early morning and evening to jogging trails. The presence of an increasing number of visitors, especially during public holidays and weekends. Through this monitoring platform you can see the whole view of the city of Kota Kinabalu and even see the sea and islands.
But there is no public transport such as buses that come to this location. You can take a taxi but it will cost you a little expensive. More save more if you climb the stairs either use the route that has been provided or scour the road. Distance from city to this location only 900 meters or a 20 minute climb.

After walking up 250 steps (some of which are broken/missing) we looked forward to an amazing view. That's not what we got -- it's an OK view. Perhaps better at sunset...

This is a good place to not jist enjoy the view but their local snacks/desserts. Their banana fritters and milktea are a must-try. You get to enjoy this while looking at Kota Kinabalu's cityscape!

It would have been a good view before all the modern shopping malls and hotels blocked it out. Now all you see is the back side of some hotels and shopping malls. None of the buildings is really that impressive. The view of the bay, sea, and islands is now gone. You'll probably have a better view from your hotel room window.

We visited this lookout on our return journey from the Shangri-la Rasa Ria Resort. The platform offers a good view of the city skyline and glimpses of the South China Sea. In earlier times, this view would have been quite impressive without the tall buildings. It does provide a timely reminder of the development in Kota Kinabalu and the march of progress. The buildings are not overly inspiring or memorable. There is a kiosk at the platform that provides simple food and drink options.
