Visit Kokol hill by all means but not Kokol Elf. There are multiple view points on the road to the Kokol hill to enjoy the scenic beauty of the ocean from the mountains. Kokol Elf is a rip off for the foreign tourists (90RM entry fee per person even for children 3 years is really not worth it and is a big rip off).

Worth to drive up there as the sunset view were amazing and spectacular. Parking can be challenging as there weren't any designated parking spots. Just roadside parking and the roads were narrow. But, be careful when driving especially after dark because certain parts of the road did not have any safety railing because it was really dark.

Spent a day hired a driver and went touring up in the mountains just out of KK. We went to Tambunan and then to Kenningau then up into the Crocker range then back to KK. The scenery was beautiful and never saw a tourist. The roads are great , the people are friendly. We stopped a a roadside stall selling bunches of local fruit for 1 Ringit. Luch at cafe in Kenningau cost us about $2.50 AUD each. The taxi driver was very happy to be going somewhere different as most tourists stick to the usual haunts. Loved it and would go again and explore further afield next time. Surprisingly lots of Catholic Churches dotted everywhere along the way.

Bukit Kokol trips to take or drive 25 km in 50 minutes depending on traffic conditions. Kokol Hill is located in a small area of Menggatal. This location is becoming increasingly popular in the local community, especially for the people living around the town of Menggatal and Inanam town. This is because Kokol Hill is famous for the scenery are very beautiful and peaceful. See the sunset over the hills is very romantic if the weather is good. Night time view is also quite exciting. Neon lights colorful small size such as LEDs are quite interesting.
The height of this hill is practically the same as squatters Crocker Range from around 1,500 feet above sea level. Cold temperatures began to be felt at the level of the middle during the trip up to the top of the hill. There are many villages along the way to the top of this hill. In addition to the village there are also several primary schools and health clinics to help the locals. There is also a famous resort on the hilltop is the Valentines Resort. You can see the view from the top of these four areas include Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu, Penampang and Putatan.
But there is no public transport to reach the area. Even if there is a car broom is often used by locals which is based in Menggatal. But quite easy if you have your own vehicle.

The sunrise is worth it, however be very careful being alone up there is dangerous. Don't even think about walking down and enjoying the view a bit because you meet dangerous wild dogs who easily aim at attacking you. My recommendation is to rent a car and only go out in a safe place, otherwise not recommended.

I was staying at the Kasih Sayang Resort in Kokol Hill. To enjoy the drive make sure you are driving a car that can climb steep roads (recommends at least a 1.5 cc). Don't rush, enjoy a slow casual drive while enjoying the view. Keep your windows done once the air gets cool, it's refreshing (as long as there is not trucks in front of you!). The road uphill is winding, so if you have motion sickness, take your meds before you start off. Bring a windbreaker, it gets windy and cold especially in the evenings.
Just a word of caution if you are staying at Rasa Sayang Resort. Waze will give you two possible routes back from town. One is the main well-paved tarmac road (which I would recommend) and the other is a short-cut, but it takes you through a very narrow unpaved off-the-track road. Bumpy, narrow, certain parts extremely steep. I do not recommend that, especially at night in pitch darkness. But if you are the adventurous type, you can try - make sure your car is in good condition and can take a steep climb, good absorbers, bright lights and a medium size car (big cars unadvisable).
The restaurant at Rasa Sayang serves pretty good food with a great view. Service is friendly and efficient.
It's a good short getaway as it is only about an hour drive from the city. Quiet, great cool refreshing air, slow paced, nice drive with a view.

In Kokol farmstay they have swings that overlook KK cityview, It was simply breathtaking, and it look surreal in picture. A word of caution, there's NO safety features/safety net around the swing area. And the swing were placed at the edge of platform.
And most important, for Muslims, you may come and visit Kokol farmstay for photo taking at the swings but DO NOT stay at Kokol Farmstay. Dogs were everywhere, even roaming around in the dining area. The foods served is highly doubt of its halalness.
Hotel rooms itself are poorly maintained, spiderwebs on the corner of the ceiling. The bathroom, seems they're doing a DIY work in installing the sink, faucet even the water hose was only connected with tape. The most sketchy of all was the door of room 109, someone must have drunk enough to kick that door you can see the crack.

We are finding KK somewhat boring and dirty and looking for somewhere with fresh air and a view. Kokol Hill was a great diversion. The road up left a little to be desired but didn't take all that long. The resort we found at the top had a great view, some good reasonably priced food and a beer. All good.
Much better value from Uber compared to quoted taxi prices

What is it with the resorts at Kokol Hill? So many of them...every single one...great scenery but ....F&B and cleanliness and service...very disappointing! How is that even possible? My BEST recommendation is eat before you visit...

Stay at Kokol Farmstay, with a reasonable price, the room can fit in for 6 person and the price about MYR200. With basic amenities, woke up in da morning from da window can see the Mount Kinabalu what a great view, from the the observation platform can see city view as well the place also have the place for BBQ, its a good place to get together.

How long does it take to walk up and down the hill from the bottom?
Written 20 June 2017
Around 4 hours from Klinik Mengattal to the Kokol Haven, wear reflective clothes as the road is narrow and there is no foot path.

Hi, how can we access Kokol Hill independently without a guide. Would a taxi be expensive?
Written 28 July 2016
hi Straddiem
yes u can, u can self drive or take a taxi but than u will hv to arrange another taxi for ur return journey. renting a car for a day will cost RM80 to RM120 depending where u get ur hired car. taxi to kokol will be expensive (taxi is relatively expensive in Malaysia), there n bck wld b equal to renting a car for the day so u may as well rent. u can use gps, waze, google map whatever u are accustom2. its a steep climb, so b prepared.
if u need hlp with renting a car (cheap) jst give me a buz, njoy.
