We're not 'temple people' but this small worship area was quite small and personal and had a special sort of feeling about it. Of course there were the usual stalls selling incense etc but not in an overt way.

Once through the Harmony Arch at the beginning of Carpenter Street is this colourful Chinese Temple, a sacred place of worship built in 1863 by Teochew immigrants from China. In 1884 it suffered great damage due to fire and was rebuilt and carefully maintained to this day as a place of historical cultural heritage, worship and popular with tourists. We did not venture inside, visitors are welcome but need to remove their shoes at the main door.

Worth dropping in to see inside. Leave your shoes at the door. Across road can be found food stalls after your temple visit.

The Hiang Thian Siang Ti Temple is located in the heart of Chinatown in Carpenter Street. It has an interesting history (ask at the Chinese Museum near the Waterfront) and has plenty of character.

You cannot miss this... walk along Carpenter Street and it's there. Small Temple but of historical significant to the Chinese of Kuching. All the history on the Temple can be obtained on noticed board located just outside the Temple. Well maintained and traditional Chinese architecture... another place of interest to visit while in Kuching.

A temple built by the teochew community, it has the same ornate designs as in most temples. My husband liked the three D tiger on a wall display as it was fun! The roof is adorned with the usual dragon and Phoenix motifs.

We visited three taoist temples. All of them were small inside. Not comparable to Kuala Lumpur, Pinang or Singapore. But they top the atmosphere of the Kuching Chinatown.

This small Cantonese Taoist temple located in Carpenter Street was built by Chinese settlers from Guangdong Province in 1889. Inside the temple is a tortoise pond. Located in front of the temple, on the opposite side of the road, is a stage for opera performances. The temple itself is colourful and well maintained.
