We had a very good day at the river. The guides are excellent and the lunch provided was very good.
The drive from Kuching to the river should take about an hour. In our case the driver picked us up and we had to drive an additional hour to pick up more guests from a homestay. The homestay was far away from both Kurching and the river. Same story on the way back. This meant 4 hours in the car and 4 hours on the river.
Not sure if rainforestkayaking often picks up guests from that homestay but it was not the first time they did it. So making sure you are not sent on that extra trip might be a good idea.
Kayaking was great anyway and also our son (10 years) enjoyed it very much. The river is easy and no kayaking experience is needed.

We went with our two children, ages 5 and 7, and we all loved this trip. Booking was very easy via the web site and emails with Ivy. We were picked up on time and went to the Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, where we saw several orag utans. Then, we went to the river. All the kayaking is downstream and not physically strenuous so you can enjoy the scenery. The equipment and lifejackets were in good condition, and we had 4 guides for 17 people. We stopped at a rainforest waterfall (which was a lot of fun), stopped for lunch in a little village, stopped at a beach and just enjoyed the rainforest and mountains. We received a CD that night with loads of fantastic photos from the day. The best part about the trip was the guides - everyone was very friendly and helpful and seemed to really enjoy their jobs, each other and working for Borneo Trek and Adventure. Two side notes - we did package C with the kids, and we would do package B in the future just because the kids were a bit tired after the kayaking and not as interested in the long house. My son left his shoes at one of the beaches, and one of the guides found the shoes the next day and then sent them to us!

We visited Kuching for a weekend break to escape busy work schedules. The opportunity to spend a day with in the rainforest kayaking was very appealing and we booked it in advance of arriving through the website - Rainforestkayaking.com
We were picked up at 9am from our hotel in central Kuching and told we were the only people on the trip that day. This is great, given that often these types of tours do not run in these circumstances.
After an hour's car ride to the start point on the river, we were shown some of the local pitcher plans by the road before starting the trip on the river. We had a double canoe which was comfortable and provided with lifejackets.
Our guide was really informative and the landscape was beautiful and peaceful. As the water levels were low, we had to watch the guide's directions carefully and the time quickly passed before we were stopped for lunch (5km into the journey). At this point, we went into a local village where our guide showed us a wealth of herbs and other foods that grow locally. Noodles were provided for lunch, as well as the opportunity to try the local produce (fruit and veg). Then we headed back to the river to complete the final 6km.
The landscape varied to much more granite rock formations and rainforest and so we saw some colourful birdlife as well as monkeys overhead.
Before we finished, we took a quick swim in the river which was refreshing.
We changed before heading back to Kuching and were back by 4.30, so we had time to do some other sightseeing in town.
Overall, it was a fantastic day out and to top it all off, the photos that the guide had taken on the journey with the waterproof camera were delivered to us at our hotel that evening at no extra charge. We now have great memories as well!

Given the glowing reviews I had read before deciding on Borneo Trek & Kayak Adventure (aka Rainforest Kayak), I was, to say the least, surprised with the quality of the tour that greeted us. The specific package we chose was Package C which included Semengoh, river kayaking and the longhouse.

While the email booking process was efficient and the vehicle came for us on time, once we made payment to the owner, we were left with a local driver/guide who was silent for most part of the journey except to tell us that we should go into Semengoh on our own and return to the car park by 10 am.

As an aside (because afterall, this is not within the kayak company's control), the Semengoh was pleasant enough but for Singaporeans, just not that interesting. Plus, on the morning we were there, the orangutans were high up in the trees so it required some eye strain to watch them.

The river kayaking, however, was well-executed with plentiful guides and indeed, the guides are brilliant photographers always ready to catch a good shot of you and your fellow kayakers. Fun experience overall but do remember to reapply your sunscreen or wear longs - we were pretty sunburned by the end of the 3 hours.

Lunch, which you will take midway through the kayaking, was unimpressive but sufficient.

We did not get to end on a high note unfortunately as the long house visit again was an utter disappointment. Not only were the local guides men of few words, they started out in fact explaining things in Malay to this other pair of tourists in our group, neglecting my husband and I who do not speak a word of Malay. Only after I specifically requested that they use the English language with us, did one proceed to translate. I would not go as far to say that they were deliberately ignoring us but that perhaps they just were not so comfortable in English - it suffices to say, however, that this is not what one would expect on a paid tour.

I have to admit, the river and villages along the river is worth visiting. The limestone formation is indeed very attractive. However, the whole trip is somehow is just like any other tour that you could expect, giving you what you paid for. No other value added.

We were unfortunate to have Oya as our guide. He was pretty drunk that morning. Red eyes, smells with alcohol. How could you expect to be safe with such a guide around. Unlike his brother Asim who was very talkative and informative, Oya is very quite and reserve.

Generally the trip is disappointing, and the management of the company should be aware that drunken guide should not be allow in any way to handle clients as this concerns with safety. I am sorry. I totally disagree with other reviewers. I am very disappointed with this kind of unethical tour operator.

I AM REALLY ANNOYED BY OUR GUIDES! Not only he shouted at me and my partner for being slow, he even cursed us. Who on earth going dare to say to that to a stranger, you can find him with this company! ULTIMATELY VERY VERY TERRIBLE! His Name???? Coyia! The drunk guide who thinks he is the best of kayakers in the river. No safety briefing and what not, what do he expect from a first timer like us to paddle like a pro. Be there yourself and I bet you'll be very annoyed by his stare and shouting from the beginning until the end of the tour. I'm very suprise to read other review saying the guides were helpful. If they were helpful, at least they gave us option to pair up with them "THE PRO". What made us become more disappointed, the lunch! Paid so much but was given a cold dry noodle at the 4km stop at a small Bidayuh village. We paid so much but was given 4 Malaysian Ringgit cold noodle with is definitely not worth it! They kept on saying that it is from the famous kolo mee noodle store in Kuching which taste terrible when it is COLD! This tour is definitely NOT RECOMMEDED for first timer.

The kayaking trip was very nice and interesting. We got a tasty lunch and had a wonderful time on the river.

Usually I would rate the tour 5/5 stars but unfortunately the driver stole money from us when we made a stop at Semenggoh Sanctuary. It was "only" 100 RM (~20€), but because of that we were 50 RM short when we had to pay. We definitely took more than the required amount of money with us and left it in the backpack in the minibus when we watched the orang-utans.

In conclusion we would recommend the trip, but keep your valuables with you at all times. Even better, take everything with you to avoid anyone from rummaging in your belongings.

Well organised trip. Guides are three brothers and they have very good english. The kayaking is downstream so not challenging although you might get wet getting in and out or in the rapids. There is an opportunity to swim too. Would definitely recommend as a good morning/day activity in Kuching

The kayaking trip itself is a good idea for an outdoor activity close to Kuching – the scenery is breathtaking and the paddling down the river enjoyable.

But, I would definitely pick another company next time. Our group was constantly at the back and ushered to move faster. After lunch, we realized that one of our kayaks had a hole and was basically sinking, making the movement very slow. One of the guides spent half an hour watching us getting the water out the kayak, then another half an hour explaining that everything was fine. It wasn’t, so he moved into this kayak and paddled as fast as he could, stopping every 15 min to pour the water out. As a result, one of us in the kayak was ushered to the end-point without stopping for a swim and made wait for an hour. When we complained about the issue to the head guide, he merely replied “it was ok”.

It was not OK. Please, check your kayaks before you give them to your customers and instead of ushering them, find out the reason they are behind.

The journey to the kayaking place was good with beautiful scenery but it was ruined by the tour guide. It as terible management by the BORNEO TREK whereby the guide name oya were showing unpleasant alk thoughout the day,he has blamed for being show duirng the kayaking as we were actually enjoying the nature. Oya was very rude to one of the gues where he screamed something bad to it infront of the other guests. He was not professional during the tour, it was very bored as we wre not provided any informative about the surrounding area. For lunch, we are expecting heavy meal for our tummy as we need more energy for the nxt kilometer. We were only served the local noodle"KOLOMEE" which has not freshly made. Such a dissappointed tour! Will never recommed to others and not value for money.
