We hired a taxi and went to Astana but we had to see it from the outside as visitors were not allowed to go inside without prior permission.

You can see this building clearly from the opposite side of the river. Astana is the official residence of the Yang Dipertua Negeri Sarawak. A grand, big and quite an imposing landmark.

This building is located across the river. You can take the pictures of this building from the Kuching Waterfront. Or across the river by a public small boat to get other views. Just for information, behind this building, there is an orchid garden.

We biked here, which was a nice ride. From here you get a nice view of the beautiful House of Parliament which is right next door. Our guide explained how many people were placed in the prison cells and the three ways people were executed.....back in the days:-( Other then that there is not much to see.

On the northern bank across the river from the Waterfront the Astana, being the official residence of the Governor of Sarawak (not open to visitors), is a regal complex embodying an architectural and historical monument of the history of Kuching. The palace was a bridal gift from Charles Brooke (2nd “White Rajah” of Sarawak) to his wife Margaret.

This place is not open to the public. Only open for government functions. The only thing you can do is to appreciate the building from outside the gates. It is located opposite the orchid garden.

The astana is now used as the residence of the governor but was built by Charles Brooke in 1870. As it is the governor's residence it is not open to the public, so you can only admire the exterior. Nevertheless that is pretty impressive as it occupies a prominent riverside location and looks wonderful lit up at night.

It is a house owned by the Malaysian royal family, one can see this when taking a river cruise or river boat, I doubt that this is open to public as it is a private house. Its location to Sarawak river and privacy is good, it looks good from a distance.
