Drink for a good cause ! The owner came to explain the concept of his bar on our first night here, we found the prices quite good as well as the music and the location.

Went there based in TripAdvisor's rating as I was travelling alone.
No food
Drinks - decent selection
Pricing - why not go for more?!
Cocktails - decent enough, though I'll always start with a mojito to 'test market' but they don't have it - Long Island wasn't disappointing
Service - friendly
Crowd - late + mixed of expats and locals
Verdict - will go again

Really good bar, friendly people, get up to the bar and start chatting away. The staff from Bla Bla Bla tend to rock up here as well and are good folk.
If you're feeling adventurous, the super strength (and cheap) beer here is 8.6%. And it's called 8.6%, so that's easy for you to remember.

Very strange this bar got ranked #1. The bar is average, with a wide selections of beers and well priced. Decent bar, but definitely not the #1 attraction for sure. I am still very curious how this place ended up as # 1 in attractions for Kuching.

I do agree actually, we're not sure why Monkeebar has made it to number 1 attraction since it is simply a bar - I think it is the cause that people are rating so favourably, since Monkeebar is the only non-profit bar in Malaysia. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit nonetheless :)

Use to love the monkee bar and all it supports for animals. A great concept and the decor and drinks are great. But the amount of cigarette smoke is just too overpowering. Inside and outside is full of smoke and its very hard to avoid, especially when even the workers behind the bar are also smoking. Its a great shame, because it should be a really great venue.

My wife and I popped into this bar for a drink, having read the many favourable reviews. We enjoyed the great atmosphere, mixing with locals and other travellers. The wine was good and the prices reasonable. We would highly recommend a visit.

Unlike the other bars in the area, this is a place happens to contributes one third of their profits towards the 'Orang Utan Project, which I think is really cool.
I've always thought that the most important thing about a bar is the people who run it; and this place seems to do that!
So enjoy the music, cheap beers and drink for a good cause!

Drinking for a cause is always a great reason to drink. Plus, it's cheap. The music played at night was good. They don't have a kitchen, but we managed to get our food from somewhere else through them and it was delicious.

We visited the Monkeebar on a quiet weekday afternoon. I was initially struck by the funky fit out that could easily hold its own alongside others in Melbourne or London. The vibe is chilled with a good range of tunes whilst the service is friendly & efficient. It's a great place to enjoy a drink at reasonable prices, and the fact that it contributes towards helping orangutans & sunbears is even better!

This is a great bar, but hardly the number 1attraction in kuching. Not even the best bar in kuching ...or on the same street. Who's fixing these ratings?

Hi Andrew R! Thanks for your visit to Monkeebar, and for your review. We are also not sure why we're rated as an 'attraction' - we listed Monkeebar as a bar, in the night-life category. It seems to be a bit of a fault in the way Trip Advisor lists and rates things. The large numbers of high ratings for us are on account of the philosophy of the bar we believe, as it's the first and only non-profit bar in Kuching. Many visitors to Borneo are here because of the wildlife, and we assume patrons of the bar find it an extra enjoyable venue as they get to financially contribute to the well-being of the wildlife they came to see, while simply drinking!
It's a little harsh that you describe it as a 'great bar' but then give it a terrible rating... but we assume you were simply trying to add a fair balance to the rest of the high ratings here :) Hope to see you again and serve you drinks on behalf of the monkeys.

hello sir...im outstation in kuching for 3 days and 2 night and this is my 1st visit to kuching. I tempted to go to monkeebar after read some reviews. So I plan to go there on tuesday night for a chill time with myself. Can u please reserve a seat a table for 1... for me? please.. 😊
