Of course one has to haggle, as in any market. Just state what you are prepared to pay, say clearly that the amount must include drink[s] and bread. Ask them to show you what they will put on the plate for cooking. Then choose from the abundance of quantity and variety on display. If they say that it enough and... More

The fish market is fine, they are hard core hagglers though so bring your tough talk! Avoid having your fish cooked at the BBQ at the very end of the market - rip offs. We bought a lot of food - whole fish, prawns, sardines, crab and being Aussies we know our seafood, so we noticed that a lot of... More

The trick in buying fresh fish at a fair price is to go early in the morning or late at night. This is great if you are able to cook home as you can get some pretty good fish for a good price. A St-Pierre in the oven is great. Easy to prepare and takes 20-25 to cook depending on... More

The tip is... haggle for the fish you want and the price, always haggle 'haggle is the word for everything you buy anywhere in Morocco'... there are plenty of fish in this market, usually all fresh but you could be asked to pay an extortionate amounts if you don't haggle 'here it is that word again'.. a good amount of... We loved eating at the stalls of the fresh fish market - picking out the recent catch by pointing, listening, and then enjoying the well prepared fish. Two days in Essaouira, two lunches at the fish market. Perfecto!

Our guide book (six years old) said to try not to eat at a place where you're hassled to sit down, but unfortunately we were hassled by the people at every single stall. We chose a place, sat down and had an interesting experience munching on different types of grilled fish while surrounded by strong smells, shouting stall workers and... More

We came for dinner with 3 small kids. Ate at stall 14 and it seemed fairly clean. We selected a small plate of shrimp and calamari, 2 fish (sole) and a crab. The man weighed the food and said 300 MAD includes salad and drinks. We didn't know you could/should negotiate and said ok. Didn't find out until after the... More

The fish markets are fun to see, with odd seafood laying around and people trying to sell them. The nearby BBQ stands are crazy; while trying which one to go to (they are basically all the same) we had every stand screaming at us for attention, and a bloke even jumped up and down with a dead stingray in one... Well, you know: a fish market in Africa. What to expect is pretty obvious: smell(s), strange fish, cats, people running around and a lot of activity. Definitely worth the visit!

When visiting the Essaouira, the fish market is a must visit! It is chaotic, as every seller wants you to sit at their table. The fish and seafood tasted incredibly good. Prawns and sardines are simply yummy :)
