The Welwitschia plains scenic drive starts about 45 minutes drive outside of Swakopmund. It is entirely self-guided. The plants are everywhere, and there are some pretty mountain ranges in the distance to photograph, particularly if you get there in the late afternoon.

This was an easy drive in a 2 wheel drive sudan. We had our infant in a car seat and made the most of the marked beacon stops as the little one needed. 4hrs in total, and the return drive is on a tar road most of the way. Well worth the visit. Permit is NAD60 per person plus NAD10... More

It is large with poor roads and very barren in places. The Moonscape is worth seeing. If a botanist the largest welwitschia is a highlight but well away from anywhere. Few animals and less birds.

You have to love the beauty of the arid Namib Desert to really enjoy this trip. It is a round trip with awesome scenery of landscapes and plants that are hundreds of years old. The Welwitschia Mirabalis is not the most spectacular plant to appreciate, but seen it survive in that arid environment is something to behold. The road is... More

Take this desert road to view the Welwitschia plants. Drive slow. Stop. Get out and explore the plants. Quite amazing

This is a not-to-miss for even the mildest of nature lovers. Read a bit beforehand on your own about this remarkable plant that is related to the conifers that inhabit higher elevations and vastly-different ecosystems. The Welwitschia plant has only two leaves (though the elements cause them to rip so it appears as though there are more), they are dioecious... More

The first part of the drive is great, but you do get a good shake and rattle for some of the way. These plants are incredible - surviving for 2000+ years. They were even flowering when we went to have a look!

We visited these amazing plants on a cruise ship bus tour - out to the Namib desert. I loved seeing these plants and I strongly recommend that you see this unique plain as a part of a bigger multi-site tour. The Welwitchia plant – These rare desert growers are found only in the Namib desert and grow for 1500 years... More

The plants are very interesting and worth a visit. The main dirt road in was good, but the road between the moonscapes and the Welwitchia plants is not great at all.

This was an amazing drive full with Welwitschia plants and Lichen. It was breathtaking! And the moon-landscape is not something you want to miss!
