Definitely an engineering marvel. Fantastic to see the ships go through here (and barely fit). Lots of great engineering went on here to make everything work. Suggest finding a documentary or book about the history before visiting, it will bring it into perspective. The Gatun...More

A must see. A bucket list check off for us. We woke up at 4 am to make sure we did not miss any of it.

This is one of the most amazing engineering marvels on this earth! It was fascinating to watch all of the ships being raised and lowered in the locks. The first day we just watched the activity and the next day we transited through and both...More

We visited Gatun locks, the old ones, three years ago prior to transiting the Canal in our boat. Here we are back again three years later. The new locks are pretty amazing, huge. The feat of engineering for the original locks is impressive, but the...More

All kind of vessels traffic here. It is simply impressive to observe this work of human ingenuity, to avoid the typography of the place, to have a way of access from one ocean to the other.

We were booked on an 11 day Panama Canal Caribbean Cruise. Getting up super early to watch as we headed into the Gatun Locks was for me the highlight of the trip. 10 years to build. Original doors to open and close the locks still...More

The engineering of the three chambers locks that raise our ship to the Gatun Lake 26 meters above sea level is genius and the lowering down to reach the sea level is a must see this part was the top of our cruise Zuiderdum

I've been through these locks in: 1969 (with the Army Special Forces), and again in 2009 on a cruise ship. It's an impressive experience! We saw the new /widened canal (under construction) during our cruise - there near the Pan American Bridge (which is gorgeous!),...More

On our cruise with HAL we traveled through the Panama Canal Gatun Locks and then cruised Gatun Lake before traveling back through the locks and continuing our journey. The whole process was very interesting and we were able to watch ships in front, back and...More

You'll get zero help from the staff here if you have no travel arrangements back to Colon. There is no taxi rank, no public transport and Uber is not available. The staff just say it is your problem. We were lucky to squeeze 5 into...More

I too am not sure if old center is open for business. We were picked up by bus and our guide did mention the new visitor center. Unfortunately, it wasn't part of the tour.

Our tours were also through our cruise line but I just did a google search. There is a Robtad’s Panama Canal Tour that quickly popped up. I clicked the link and it took me to Trip Advisor with a lin’ to book the tour.
