On the outskirts of St Petersburg, but worth the hour long drive. The Amber Room is really amazing considering that it was completely rebuilt after being destroyed. This was the first thing we saw in Russia and the beautiful colored buildings really blew us away. We expected drab because it was Russia. A lot of things are, but the museum... More

Beautiful place, the Amber room and mirrors are stunning, but I found myself wishing that the weather was nicer so we could walk around the grounds more. Wow... they were incredible and well groomed. Even when we went there were huge crowds, I'd be tempted to get there first thing AM if possible to avoid them. And, like many of... More

The palace, built by Peter the Great as a token of his love for his wife Catherine. The palace was occupied, looted and finally was destroyed during the war. Since that time the palace has been lovingly and meticulously restored to reflect its former splendor and elegance. The palace is truly one of the most amazing buildings you could ever... More

Another half day excursion, about 45 minutes coach ride. Then best part of an hour queue outside. We were entertained by a band while we waited, but would have been awful in the rain. The palace is awesome as are the grounds. Needed longer there, but loved it.

Catherine Palace was named after Catherine the first, the wife of Peter the Great. Originally a two story building the palace owes its opulence to Catherine’s daughter Empress Elizabeth who instructed architects to completely redesign the palace to rival Versailles. Fun Fact: More than 100kg of gold was used in the façade and numerous statues on the roof. For more... More

Definitely worth a visit even though its in the outskirt of the city and may a bit of a hassle if you are to go without a tour guide. Fantastic interior with lots of history. Don't save on the audio guide/guide inside. The stories are worth the money. And of course, how can you miss out on the Amber room... More
