Perched on a hill over looking Magadan is this Mask of Sorrow commemorating the people perished in nearby gulags and camps. This is fairly far from town, so take a taxi.

The statue itself is a strange combination of a big face with small faces sculpted in it its beautiful and sad at the same time At the back a crossed man and a crying person sitting on its knees There is a lot of symbolism...More

Mask of Sorrew is situated on top in Magadan city. Nice view but windy mood. Statue is inetersting, you can o up to stairs.

It is difficult to articulate the impact of this sculpture and hard to imagine anything depicting the losses this city, as a former Gulag, has suffered. Everyone who visits this region should invest some time visiting this sombre but beautiful monument.

-a must visit memorial near Magadan in the Russian Far East -very thoughtful monument/sculpture design -excellent photographic opportunity -highly recommended for any travellers in that region
