Icons of early Christianity have been destroyed by war. The Novgorod State Museum had a wealth of early iconography. This museum has a collection of artefacts dating from the earliest times of Novrogod when it was one of the earliest seats of power in Russia. It has a huge collection of icon paintings on a variety of media but very little was in English so we didn't get a real appreciation of the significance of much of the material.... More

Being in Novgorod, I try to visit this place every time. Standard building with columns and statues inside, the museum always half-empty and ready to open new nuances for those, who like paintings. Having not so much masterpieces, it has remarkable appearance of Russian artists: Aivasovsky, Rokotov, Vasnetsov, Vereshagin to name a few. I’m fond of two canvases here: “Little... More
