We are talking about one of the great art museums of the world. Any visit to St Petersburg requires a mandatory visit. Not only does it have an awesome collection of masterpieces but the building itself (Catherine the Great's Winter Palace) is magnificent. In spite of being pounded by Nazi Siege guns it has been restored to all its splendor.

We visited as part of a Viking river cruise and but for the crowds and the one hour queue to get in the visit was well worth the wait. Just magnificent it fulfilled all our expectations.

So, so beautiful. Loved that our hotel (which was pretty simple, but comfortable enough) was right on the square where the Hermitage was and we could explore the area thoroughly.

We went on a tour and so covered 3 miles in about an hour and a half. I would need more time to savor many equisite items but got the gist of its history and the vstness of the collections. The historic value just adds icing on the cake.

Absolutely stunning collections of art that takes time to fully appreciate. I would have liked to see more of the original palace rooms though.

It has 3 million works of art and treasures housed in 5 connected buildings. Try to go on a weekday to avoid crowds. Entry is from the Winter Palace. Security is tight so bags, purses, jackets, water bottles are to be deposited in the locker room. Minimum 4 hours is required if you want to see the main state rooms... More

We booked a special tour of the Hermitage as part of our Viking cruise. Even with our early admittance and experienced tour guide this visit was a nightmare. In May the crowds were so large that you are rushed through the building and can barely take time to view the many treasures housed there. The coat check experience is so... More

This museum has an amazing collection. Unfortunately, we had just one day to spend here, I am confident that we could have spent a week and not seen everything. A visit to St. Petersburg would not be complete without a visit here. The collections from the various periods of Russian history are absolutely amazing and incredibly beautiful!
