The Russian Museum has an extensive display of Russian art through the ages laid out in attractive well sized rooms chronologically. Most of the art of the nineteenth century is unexciting, there are some truly massive paintings in the European academic tradition which are certainly impressive in scale and, in some cases, in technical virtuosity, but artistically they are rather... Particularly loved the Soviet and Russian revolution style art, a culture told through its paintings, more than just pictures on the walls...

This museum houses a fabolous collection of different art, as well as a permanent exhibit of Russian art. Lots of beautiful paintings and historical artefacts which amaze you. Definetely a must see for anyone who is interested in Russian history. We met mostly russians inside and no big tour groups were there. It was easy to navigate through the museum.... More

I wish many of the artists here were instead in the Hermitage so we could see how east-west influenced each other. It is organized by mostly a 1 artist per room basis, allowing a good look at many Russian artists who I did not know from studying "western" art history. The art of the Soviet period is bland, and no... More

The impressive palace alone is worth a visit. The museum is huge and really interesting. One should not try to see as much as possible, but focus on some point of interest, otherwise it can be overwhelming. I recommend the art of the XXth Century, specially Sundukov.

This museum contains an obviously extensive collection of Russian art and artefacts, worth visiting for the Rublev icons alone. The wooden toys at the very end of the museum are also interesting.

The museum's neoclassic architecture is spectacular. And, for me, as a dilettante of modern Russian art, the highlight was the contemporary and modern art in the Benois wing. There are QR codes you can scan throughout the museum but not in this section of the museum. Perfect for a rainy afternoon.
