Walking from Palace square to there, it was a short distance. The bridge and the columns were beautiful. Although it is not very special monument, but still it is interesting to take a look at it.

These columns can be seen in the distance from various points around St Petersburg and are kind of symbolic of the city. Up close they aren't particularly special, but you'll probably see them anyway as you wander around exploring the city. Interesting history which is...More

Unusual Vistory columns that function as beacons. These were built between 1805 and 1810 on the Neva River on Vasilieusky Island. You will pass by these several times during your tours and will probably be allowed a few minutes to photograph.

Rostra (Latin) means prow. The columns here follow Roman tradition by decorating victory columns with the prows of ships; the Romans would have used captured enemy ships. But this was built in 1811 and it retains the original significance of touting their own Russian naval...More

These Greek looking columns were originally designed to be light beacons to guide the ships, but they are now only lighted during special ceremonies.

The two tall and slender red Rostral columns on the spit of Vasilievsky Island are an obvious sight anywhere along the Palace Embankment of the Neva River. They were placed at this site in the mid-1700’s to mark the St. Petersburg port entrance, the port...More

These beautiful red columns were originally erected to be lighthouses in the Neva river. Vasilievsky island is beautiful and they are at both sides of the Stock Exchange house.

These unique columns on Vasilievsky Island stand across the street from the old stock exchange. Apparently they were originally light beacons with brazier pits on the top that were ignited to serve as navigation aids on the Neva. They are quite unusual, with a pink...More
