    The Prettiest Spot in Hiroshima.
Every now again, you find places in the world where you feel you belong. Shukkeien Garden is one such place. It is peaceful and lovely, with labyrinthine paths that go up and down hills, and you are always close to the water. Buy some food packets and you can feed the Koi and the turtles that are always eager for your handouts. You can see the whole garden in 45 minutes if you are in a rush, but I would recommend spending two hours to enjoy the peace and quiet.

Some of the most beautiful gardens I've visited on my trip
The cherry blossom is just starting to bloom (1st April) and the gardens were busy but not too full. A reasonable entry fee and you can pay an extra 100¥ for carp food. A lot of the fish weren't interested in the food I threw in but a couple did. For a 100¥ it was a fun little extra Lovely manicured lawns and good English signage across the gardens at different points of interest

    Beautiful, beautiful gardens.
We did this as part of a tour package arranged through our cruise line (princess). We arrived at the gardens early, and in true Japanese efficiency, they wouldn't let us in before 9am. The bonus was we were the first in, so it wasn't crowded at all. Even so, 45 mins was a good amount of time to see what we wanted. The gardens are so beautiful. Much better than the Japanese gardens we visited in Vancouver. Certainly worthwhile to visit when in Hiroshima.

Beauty and Tragedy in the Lovely Garden
Shukkeien Garden is one of Hiroshima's most beautiful gardens, designed way back in 1620 by a famous tea master with elements symbolizing oceans, mountains, valleys, and forests. Here are graceful bridges, tea houses, and stone lanterns, and the garden is so picturesque that it's where couples come to immortalize their moments for posterity. Located just 1 km from the epicenter of the atomic bomb, the garden was understandably severely damaged. However, the resilient Japanese managed to restore Shukkeien to its former glory just a few years after the war. Naturally, today the lovely garden houses a memorial for the city's innocent victims of the atomic bomb. The horrors of that time are thus enveloped in timeless beauty, making them almost bearable.

    A pretty botanical garden
These lovely gardens are located a ten minute walk from both Hiroshima JR station and the castle. We discovered that the gardens were built around 1620 and had been a place of refuge for many after the A bomb. It was a beautiful man-made setting and it had a real botanic garden feel, but it only supported indigenous fauna. There was a small pagoda at one end and a structure called the bridge between heaven and earth crossing the middle. At several sites along this walk we found hungry carp to feed for a 100 yen. On the far side are some rough stone steps up and down that led to a charming bamboo grove at the end. Overall a peaceful setting.

    Gardens in Hiroshima
What an amazing place; it seems that just because it is situated in an exotic place it must be amazing. Far from it. Shukkeien translated into English means shrunken-scenery garden. The gardens represent the scenery of Japanese terrain in miniature. The gardens are set around a central lake and have been in existence for over 400 years are based on Lake Xihu (West Lake) in Hangzhou, China. The gardens served as refuge after the bombing of Hiroshima. The family owned gardens were donated to the City and after considerable renovations opened to the public. The gardens resembles valleys, mountains, and forests landscapes of Japan. Meandering around the garden are different footpaths that take the visitor along the different landscapes and provide a variety of perspectives. There are different routes to follow, each with branching paths and little side paths to explore. Taking our time and slowly strolling around, enjoying the pleasant views and relaxing at one of the tea houses. Central to Shukkeien Garden is the pond, and the points of view one gets to enjoy while walking around it. Within the pond are countless Koi (carp) that visitors can feed for a small fee. The garden can be visited year round and is especially beautiful during the spring, in the Sakura period when all the cherry blossoms bloom is out and in autumn when the garden turns a stunning red and brown, and is spectacularly lit up after dark.

Well worth a visit to wander around for an hour or two. The walking paths are extremely well maintained and the landscaping is beautiful. Koi fish and turtles are everywhere and not afraid to come to the surface.

A must visit place if you are visiting Hiroshima... beautiful garden, very peaceful ... just sit on the benches and relax in the beautiful scenic view.. or walk around the garden slowly taking photos ... or feed the fishes.

They also have traditional tea making in the garden on certain days which is interesting, if a little expensive (¥600 per person). There's also an Art Museum connected to the gardens.

Entrance fee is ¥260 for adults, ¥150 for High school and university students and ¥100 for Elementery and junior high school. There is discounts for senior citizens. Just bring your passport as you may need it to get the discount.

Located in the middle of the city, Shukkeien Garden is a landscape garden. It is about a 10 minute walk from Hiroshima Castle and a 25 minute walk from the Peace Park. Entrance is 260 yen per person.

This garden is zen and a wonderful place for meditation and admiring the beauty found within. I would not miss the Shukkei-en Garden. Once inside it captures you with it's essence and vivid colors. I would definitely revisit if I had the opportunity. Thank you Tom (guided tour) for taking us to the garden and walking us through the views, bridge and lake.

The place is awesome even in February. It is well tailored and maintained, and the preservation of species are noticeable throughout the gardens. Nice viewing pathways that lead to beautiful sceneries. A must visit for photo lovers and capture the moment, or just stroll, sit and enjoy the beauty and serenity of this artistic Oriental landscape proudly displayed by the City of Hiroshima.

Beautiful Japanese garden in Hiroshima. We went in November and had a light shower. They have a basket filled with clear umbrellas that you can use and return. I loved the red bridge and the solitary wooden boats. They made great picture spots. Nice place to go after or before the Atomic Bomb Dome. I don't think you can bring a picnic basket. Our visit was before the pandemic so masks and hand sanitizers were not required.

We were in this park at 10 or 11 and stayed for almost an hour, going at a leisurely pace. It was not crowded at this time, and for a few moments here and there, we were able to just sit and enjoy the scenery. This included cherry blossoms, plum trees, lakes, and wildlife, like fish and turtles.

The park consists of a huge lake you can walk around. If you're running low on time, there is a bridge in the middle of the lake; you can cross it once you reach the halfway point instead of doing the entire round.

I suggest buying carp food in front of the ticket office for 100 yen. It's a lot of fun and a good way to see the fish. They're pretty spread out everywhere, so don't worry about feeding the first fish you see.

All in all, this was a beautiful place. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I needed such a serene walk through the park.

I love Hiroshima, there are always new attractions to explore. I saw Shukkei-en Garden on a map, and decided to check it out. It is not far from the main train station, so it is a must. I highly recommend adding this to your itinerary. The entrance was pretty cheap, around 260 yen a person. You need at minimum an hour here as there are trails and interesting historical markers worth reading, not to mention many photo spots and places to relax and enjoy the beauty. Japan seems to have varieties of flowers that bloom at different times of the year, so anytime is a good time to visit. The pond in the center is lovely and is full of beautiful koi fish among other species and lots of adorable turtles. These gardens are a must when visiting Hiroshima.
