Need to enjoy the sun, to breath away from the crowd, to have a afternoon walk with your sleeping baby, the banks of the river are the perfect venue. Either you'll enjoy the ducks, either you can stair the old little houses, nowadays most of them turned into restaurants.

If you are really visiting Kyoto for a couple of days you really can't help but see it. Early morning or dusk are some of the best times/ From the bridges and along the banks you can people watch and just wander.

The place just takes you back in time, the area just feels like historical Japan, many wooden shops, and stone pavements. Surrounding areas like Kawaramichi, Pontocho, and Gion has simply amazing atmosphere and scenery.

Kamogawa River has been pleasant to look at particularly the earth banks on two sides like arming the river through the history in time. It divides the city center into east and west sides and keeping both the town development and rich culture together. I did a favorite run around the river in my recent trip to Kyoto in a... More

I think it is the river that is our landmark for getting around Kyoto . Love crossing the bridges and seeing the walking trails along the river below.

I happened to stay on the North side of Kyoto and walked or biked everyday up and down this stream. My girlfriend and I in fact had the greatest memories on these paths as there are modern and old districts in between, making it a quite versatile experience. When I look back this was one of my favorite moments during... More

Nice river to meet up with friends and have a picnic under sakura during the sakura season. In summer, many people sit by the river during late evenings to have a nice beer.

Crossing over the kamogawa is like crossing back in time as you enter eastern Kyoto and the Gion neighborhood. The river is picturesque and has two walking pathways along both sides of its banks.

We were trying to find the botanical gardens on our visit so ended up traveling along the river. It was a nice day and the walkway was wide and flat but the river was bleak and uninteresting. We saw some cranes, egrets and a few ducks maybe there is more wildlife at other times during the year. We were there... More

5-6 kilometers along a shallow river. It was lovely even on a crisp December afternoon. Well worth an hour or so to relax and unwind.

Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Pontocho
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
